Vice-Chancellor's Social Champion Scholarship

Conditions of Award

Purpose of the Scholarship

This Scholarship is offered to international students intending to commence at UC in Semester 1


2023, who exhibit the University of Canberra’s core values and demonstrate a commitment to social
engagement, sustainability and reducing inequalities.

Scholarship Details

Name: The Scholarship shall be known as the Vice-Chancellor's Social Champion Scholarship.

This Scholarship is funded by the University of Canberra.

Eligibility

The Scholarship is open for consideration for:

• are located offshore at the time of application.

• have applied for but not yet commenced an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework
degree at the University of Canberra in Semester 1 2023.

o University of Canberra College packaged offers are not eligible to receive this
scholarship.

• have satisfied the program academic requirement with a minimum of 80% average (or
equivalent).

• hold any form of offer letter (including conditional or provisional offer) issued by the
University of Canberra.

• are applying to study on an Australian student visa (subclass 500).

• are a new commencing student.

• the primary visa applicant. Dependants will not be eligible for the scholarship, or able to
accompany the primary visa applicant.
Application

Applications for the Vice-Chancellor's Social Champion Scholarship close at midnight (Australian
Eastern Standard Time) on Sunday 9th October 2022.

Students are expected to apply only once through the dedicated application form on the Vice-
Chancellor's Social Champion Scholarship Webpage.

Applicants must answer each question in the application form truly and to the best of their
knowledge at the time of applying.

Selection

The Selection Committee will be comprised of representatives from the University of Canberra.

The committee will consider the following parameters in the application form:

• Financial Need
• Demonstrated values and experience in the following areas:
o Potential to evolve as a leader in ways that embrace and advance the principles of
social and economic equity, and their practice.
o Making a positive difference to the community by doing things differently, innovating,
and inspiring others.
o Curiosity and a desire to learn from, collaborate and engage with perspectives from a
range of cultural contexts.

The Selection Committee will prepare a shortlist of applicants who will be selected for interviews.
Interviews will be held in November 2022.

The final 3 scholarship recipients will be submitted to and approved by the Pro Vice Chancellor of
Future Students.

Number of Scholarships

3 scholarships will be awarded. The Committee reserves the right not to make an award or to make
an award at any time to an eligible person.

Value and Tenure of the Scholarship

The value of each scholarship is determined by the University of Canberra and is currently valued at a
maximum of $50,000 per year, broken down as follows:

Tuition fees

UC will cover the total cost of coursework tuition fees for the entire course duration. Scholarship
payments will be automatically credited against the tuition fees in your student account.

On-campus accommodation

UC will provide an allowance to assist with the cost of on-campus accommodation with a UC
approved accommodation provider, calculated based on the market rate for one bedroom in a 2 to 7
bedroom apartment. The amount of the accommodation allowance will be determined by UC based
on the accommodation available at the time and will be credited against your account with the
accommodation provider.

Financial allowance

UC will pay you a fixed amount of $10,000 each year throughout your course to support your study
and living needs while enrolled at UC. This allowance will be paid in equal fortnightly instalments to
your nominated Australian bank account, starting from the commencement date of your course.

Miscellaneous expenses

UC may, in its absolute discretion, reimburse certain miscellaneous expenses incurred by you in the
first year of your course, such as flight to Canberra (economy class), visa application, medical check
and Overseas Student Health Coverage.

To submit a claim, please email relevant documentation (e.g. airline invoice, listing your name)
to [email protected]. Claims should be made no later than six months after enrolment in
the UC course.

Transfer of the Scholarship

The Scholarship is personal to you and cannot be transferred to another person.

Course transfer

The Scholarship is only available to you whilst enrolled in the course described in your offer letter and
cannot be transferred to another course, unless approved in advance by UC. UC may approve the
request in its absolute discretion and will generally require compelling or compassionate reasons.

Non-commencement and withdrawal

If you do not commence your course, discontinue your enrolment or withdraw from UC, all payments
under the Scholarship will cease from the date of your failure to commence, discontinuation or
withdrawal (as applicable). You cannot defer or suspend the Scholarship, unless approved by UC in
exceptional circumstances.

Academic progress

You are expected to make satisfactory academic progress throughout your course. If you fail to
achieve satisfactory progress (e.g. minimum pass mark) in your study, your Scholarship will be
reviewed by UC at the end of the academic year and payments under the Scholarship may be
suspended or reduced unless otherwise approved by UC.

Termination

UC may terminate payments under the Scholarship at any time if you fail to comply with any
applicable standards of conduct, regulations, policies and procedures of UC, including any finding of
academic or general misconduct and breach of your student visa. UC may require you to repay any
scholarship benefits to which you are not entitled to. Any repayment must be made within 30 days of
receiving notice from UC.

Recipient Conditions

You may be invited to promote the course which you are enrolled and represent UC at student
orientation, marketing events and other corporate networking events. You agree that UC may
contact you for the purposes of these invitations.

Providing False or Misleading Information

The awarding of a scholarship/grant is based on the information provided to the University.


A scholarship may be withdrawn at any stage if incorrect, false or misleading information is
provided or relevant information is withheld. This includes circumstances where the false
information is unrelated to the assessment in awarding the scholarship/grant.
