Culture and Traditions

Balinese culture is a mix of Hindu-Buddhist religion

and Balinese customs. It is perhaps most known for its
dance and drama. The island is also known for its
Shadow play theatre. The most common piece of
traditional clothing is the sarong. Both men and
women wear it. Learning the basics of Balinese
culture will help you make sense of the many things
you experience during your stay. To put it simply, this
greatly improves the quality of your island experience.

Pura Tanah Lot

About 20 kilometers northwest of Kuta, Pura Tanah

Lot is one of Bali's most iconic temples. it is one of the
most holy of all the island's sea temples. It's also fun
to wander along the paths, and taking photos.

Mount Batur

Every day in Bali's predawn darkness, hundreds of

visitors begin the walk of the 1,700-meter summit of
Mount Batur. Once at the top, they watch the sun rise
above the mist-covered mountains. If you're looking for
romantic things to do in Bali for couples, this should
be top on your list.

Archaeological finds here suggest the temple is of

megalithic beginning, dating from around the 10th

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

The 17th-century Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is one of

Bali's most charming temple complexes. It sits on a
small island, in the cool highlands of central Bali. An
unusual feature is the Buddhist stupa on the left of the
entrance to the first courtyard, with figures of Buddha
meditating in the lotus position in niches on the
square base.
Lempuyang Temple Complex

If you've ever seen the famous Instagram photo of

people at the Gates of Heaven and wondered about
the location. Often just called "Lempuyang Temple".
Tourists come here to capture a photo standing
between the towering dragon staircases, which frame
the misty peak of Mount Agung.

Sekumpul Waterfall

The three to four-hour walk, passes by rice terraces

and local villages then continues through dense
tropical jungle. It can be active in parts, as you need
to hike down slippery steps, but once you arrive, you
can cool off with a refreshing swim at the base of the
falls. This is a great adventure for nature lovers who
want a taste of wild Bali far from the touristy resorts.

Balinese Cuisine and Dining

Bali's most popular dish is Nasi Goreng. A fragrant rice

dish made from chicken, and vegetables, topped with
a fried egg. I find it to be the ultimate in comfort food.
Enjoy authentic Indonesia in Bali's Warung and Rumah
Makan. The Indonesians call a small traditional
restaurant or sometimes also tiny shops. Rumah
Makan means “Eating Home”. In both, you will be
served traditional Indonesian food in a very simple
setting. Eating with your right hand is traditional,
although spoons and forks are popular with the
younger generation. Hands must be washed before and
after eating.
