LEARNER’S ACTIVITY SHEET
Dear Learner,

Good day! For this activity, you are going to describe the appearance and uses of
homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. Below are the instruction provided. Don’t
hesitate to ask for support from anyone whom you think can help you do the activities.
Most importantly, be free and creative in doing the activities but ensure safety at all times.
Have fun.

Sincerely,
Your Teacher

“Describing Mixtures”

What do you need?

3 transparent glasses with water, sugar, flour and sandy soil
What to do:
1. Label the glasses A, B and C.
2. Fill half of each glass with water.
3. Put a spoonful of sugar into glass A, flour into glass B and two (2)
spoonful of sandy soil into glass C. Stir the mixture.
4. Observe and record your observations using the table below.

Materials Mixed Color of Mixture Effect of Water in the

with Water Mixture
A. Sugar
B. Flour
C. Sandy Soil

GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. In which mixture did the added substances spread evenly?

2. Which substance sank to the bottom of the glass?

Read and understand the concepts.

A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
The substances are put together but no new substance is formed. In your activity, you prepared some
mixtures. The first mixture you prepared is a combination of sugar and water. The next mixture is
a combination of flour and water. The last mixture is a combination of sandy soil and water.
A mixture can be in any form. It may be solid, liquid or in gaseous form. Fruit salad, coffee
powder and mixed gravel are examples of solid mixtures. Your fruit juices and hot coffee are liquid
mixtures. Air is a gaseous mixture.

Directions: Describe the following mixtures.

( Ex. Durian Jam = A mixture of durian, sugar and water)

1. Halo - halo

Directions: Identify the kind of mixture as Homogeneous or Heterogeneous

Mixtures.
What do you need: Picture of juice and macaroni salad
(Or any kind of food and drink that is available at home)

What to do:
1. Observe the mixtures.
2. Write your observation on the table.

Observed heterogeneous)
Juice
Macaroni
Salad
What is the difference between
the juice and the macaroni salad?

Read and understand the concepts

Mixtures can be homogeneous when all materials in the mixture are dissolved to form what
is commonly called a solution. If you were able to identify the different components that were mixed
because they were not evenly distributed in the mixture , the mixture is called heterogeneous
mixture.

“Classifying Mixtures”

Directions: Classify the following mixtures in their proper column.

Iron Blood Books in the library

Burger Spaghetti Clothes inside the cabinet
Alcohol Wine onions and tomatoes in a basket
Smoke Fried rice cooked plain rice

Homogeneous Mixtures Heterogeneous Mixtures

“Forming Mixtures”
Let’s find out: How can you form mixtures?
What do you need:
✓ 4 glasses, tap water, teaspoon, salt, powdered milk, oil, gravel
What to do:
1. Label the glasses A, B, C, and D.
2. Half – fill the four glasses with tap water.
3. Put a teaspoon of salt into glass A, powdered milk into glass B, oil
into glass C
and gravel into glass D.
4. Stir the mixture.
5. Leave the set-ups for about 1 minute. Observe each set-up. Compare
them.
6. Fill in the table below.

Mixture Components Phase after Can you still

(Before mixing) Combining the distinguish the
Substances component?

Salt and Water

Powdered Milk
and Water

Oil and Water

Gravel and Water

GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. Which mixtures can you not distinguish the components?

4. Describe heterogeneous mixtures?

Read and understand the concepts.

A homogeneous mixture is a mixture in which the components that make up the mixture
are uniformly distributed throughout the mixture. The composition of the mixture is the same
throughout. There is only one phase of matter observed in a homogeneous mixture at a time. So, you
wouldn’t observe both a liquid and a gas or a liquid and solid in a homogeneous mixture.
A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture in which the components of the mixture are not
uniform. Different samples from the mixture are not identical to each other. There are always two or
more phases in a heterogeneous mixture.

Directions: Read and answer the following:

1. Calamansi juice is composed of calamansi extract, water and sugar. Is

calamansi juice a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture? Explain
your answer.

2. What type of mixture will you form when you mix different candies in a
container? Can you still recognize the components of the mixture?
Why?
