AFFIRMATIVE REBUTTAL ( ataque)

CLAIM (main idea) The zoo is a very good place

for kids, young people and adults to learn and be
educated about the animals.
EVIDENCE According to Nabila Aziz who is a
developer for the International Species Information
System (the world's online wild animal database). “A
study made in the year of 2007 states that
conservation and education are key elements in the
mission statements of zoos.”
IMPACT (explicar/ejemplo)
This means that a zoo is a way to educate in the
most realistic possible way, we are looking and
learning from animals that we see with our very own
eyes. For example tigers, their colors make them
stand out and we can only really appreciate this
when we see them face to face.

CLAIM: Being close to animals allows people to

better understand their necessities, we become
empathic with these living things.
EVIDENCE
According to: Annika Brinkley from the Western
Washington University ”EBE (Empathy-Based
Education) encourages compassion and emotional
connection to animals by having the visitor take the
place of an animal and encouraging them to relate
to what the animal experiences. This connection
causes people to care about animals for moral
reasons, and therefore motivates them to take
ethical action to protect them.”
IMPACT
The best way to understand someone is by being
on their place or on their shoes, being closer to
animals and understand how they live help us as
humans so that we related to animals. If we get
close into a raccoon's cage, we can understand him
and take care of him, next time we see a raccoon
we won't want to kill him or harm him.

CLAIM: Successful zoos are places who have

animals in spaces that go according to their
necessities and their wellbeing.
EVIDENCE: According to Nabila Azis blog: The
conservation Mission of Zoos “conservation research
is conducted on wildlife biology, population dynamics,
animal behavior, health and welfare and there are also
publications generated by zoos on animal care and
captivity.”
IMPACT
Zoos need to be conserved because the research
made there helps to protect animals' health and
wellbeing. Zoos do not have use animals to
entertain, like places that use dolphins doing tricks

NEGATIVE REBUTTAL

CLAIM: The animals are living beings that are not in

the world to entertain but they need a free and healthy
life outside a zoo.
WARRANT: According to ADDA (Asociación defensa
derechos animales) “Zoos are captivity and
entertainment centers where collections of wild animals
are exhibited in solitary, often in solitary confinement,
with the main aim of satisfying the curiosity of visitors.
IMPACT
Animals should not be a form of entertainment because
they are living beings, people need to find another form
of entertainment. Animals suffer a lot in zoos, most
animals suffer mental issues due to the frustrations of
being alone in small places.

CLAIM: A zoo becomes a dangerous place if the place

is not designed according to the animal’s necessities.
WARRANT: According to the Born Free Foundation from
England, “Animals are adapted to specific natural
environments and to exhibit particular behaviors. Being
born in captivity does not remove their inherent
instincts and needs.”
IMPACT: This means that the reality of animals in a
zoo is not natural, for example: birds may get no
opportunity to fly in zoos; they may not even
experience the sky overhead.Mammals may not be
able to climb or run.

CLAIM: Animals should not live in such small places,

this can damage their health.
WARRANT: According to the Born Free Foundation from
England, “zoos can never recreate the complex
environment that animals have evolved to encounter in the
wild and many animals suffer in captivity as a result.”
IMPACT
Animals need a proper place to live, the conditions in
which they need to live are usually not met by the zoos,
animals can change their behavior and their reactions
based on this. An animal who is locked in a small
space will start acting different, like we did when we
were in lockdown during the pandemic.
