Concept Notes
Media and Information Literacy (MIL), its potential to enable individuals to
process and evaluate online information with discernment. Both media and
information literacy skills are essential, though these are not something you either
have or haven’t got. Individuals today are bombarded with media and information
and are called to deconstruct and evaluate messages constantly. To be able to do
that definitely requires some level of media and information literacy

Elements of Media Literacy

Critical Thinking - Enables audience members to develop independence


about media content. If we do not know why we watch/read/listen to
something, we have taken no responsibility for our choices.
Understanding the process of Mass Communication – If we know the
process, we can form expectations of how they can serve you.
Awareness on the impact of media on individual and society – Printing
press change the world and the people in it, Mass media do the same - if we
ignore the impact of media, we risk being caught up and carried along by that
change rather than controlling it
Strategies for Analyzing – if we make meaning we must possess tools with
which to make fit. Understanding strategy behind the placement of photos on
a newspaper for example.
Media Content that provides insight to our culture – we know a
culture and its people by the use of communication
Ability to enjoy and appreciate media content – Media Literacy is not about
always being suspicious of harmful effects.
We take college classes to enhance understanding and appreciation of novels.
Same concept for media text
Development of Responsible Production Skills – Many profession now
employ some form of media: for use in training, to enhance presentations
and to keep clients/costumers

Components of Information Literacy


Identify – Identify nature and extent of the information needed.
Find – find needed information effectively and efficiently
Evaluate – evaluate its information and its sources critically
Apply – apply information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
Acknowledge – acknowledge the sources of information and the ethical, legal
and socio economic issues sorrounding information

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: Read and Follow directions in each activity.


Activity 1. Identify the millennials, research on their characteristics. List at
least three of their characteristics in terms of media habits, lifestyles, and
preferences.

Activity 2. Write a reflection on your experiences in using information obtained


from media or the Internet.
