Types of Animal Behavior:

1. Innate (Instinctual) Behavior: inherited trait (instinct) is something an organism is born with
and cannot learn or teach to its offspring. Behaviors are dictated by specific body systems,
like the nervous system, which responds to stimuli in the environment.
a. Innate behavior is behavior that's genetically hardwired in an organism and can be performed
in response to a cue without prior experience.
b. Reflex actions, such as the knee-jerk reflex tested by doctors and the sucking reflex of human
infants, are very simple innate behaviors.
c. Some organisms perform innate kinesis, undirected change in movement, and taxis, directed
change in movement, behaviors in response to stimuli.
d. Fixed action patterns consist of a series of actions triggered by a key stimulus. The pattern will
go to completion even if the stimulus is removed.
e. Migration is the regular seasonal movement, often north and south along a flyway, between
breeding and wintering grounds.
2. Learned Behavior: is learned or taught to offspring to better their life. Organisms are not born
knowing these behaviors.
a. Habituation is a simple learned behavior in which an animal gradually stops
responding to a repeated stimulus.
b. Imprinting is a specialized form of learning that occurs during a brief period in young animals—
e.g., ducks imprinting on their mother.
c. In classical conditioning, a new stimulus is associated with a pre-existing response through
the repeated pairing of new and previously known stimuli.
d. In operant conditioning, an animal learns to perform a behavior more or less frequently
through a reward or punishment that follows the behavior.
e. Trial and Error, learning that occurs when an animal receives a reward for making a particular
response
f. Communication is an exchange of information that results in a change of behavior.
g. Insight is learning in which an animal uses previous experience to respond to a new situation.
3. Learning and cognition
a. Problem-solving
