Contemporary Art
Contemporary Art is influenced by the economic, social, political and environmental
context where the artist is immersed. It can be said that contemporary art is the artist’s
expression of his perception and comprehension of the context.
The following are examples of an art forms from visual, literary, applied and performing arts.

Contemporary Art is prominent in the Philippines and has been appreciated by so
many people, and some of them were not even aware that they are looking at fine examples
of Contemporary Art. These artworks are expressions of the artists thoughts and feelings
based on their experiences.
Contemporary Philippine artist hails from the different regions of the country.
Contemporary Philippine Artworks are multifaceted and are expressive renditions of the
artist’s perception of what were observed and experienced. Viewers can appreciate
contemporary Philippine art more by employing all of their senses.
Expressions of contemporary Philippine art are influenced by social, historical,
geographical, ideational, personal, and technical factors.
Elements of Contemporary Art
Contemporary Arts have different elements that are put together to come up with a
distinct artwork. These elements include:
1. Appropriation, this relates to the modifications made by the artist.
2. Hybridity, this refers in the use of different art mediums that are put together.
3. Technology, its application highlights the creativity of the artist.
4. Performance, carried out for viewers to experience.
5. Space, intricate use of space.

Integrative art employs the use of different art elements used together in distinct
different expressions. It is also a fusion of different art disciplines using different
styles and media in creating art.
The distinct features of contemporary Philippine Art include.
1. Communal nature, as it reflects the relationships build around the bonds of
community and society.
2. Intuitive, as Filipinos are immersed in their consciousness of themselves, their
community and their culture.
3. Holistic, as individuals, groups of people and events are perceived in their entirety as
well as the unitive use of art materials and forms.
4. Creative process, as the artist puts more emphasis on now their artwork was made
than on the artwork itself.
5. Integrative, as it encompasses religious, moral, spiritual, social, and environmental
concerns.
6. Multi-focal, as it considers everything and everyone, the wide perspective of the
artwork as well as both artist and viewer.

Various art forms are known from the different regions or island groups of the Philippines;
generally, from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Through these various art forms, we tend to
picture out the different practices of Filipinos from the different regions that, when
integrated, describe what the Filipino is.
Philippine Contemporary Arts
Philippine contemporary arts can be described into visual arts, literary arts and
performing arts.
Performing arts is when a person is doing certain actions and movements in front of
an audience that go along with sound in a space and time.
There are types of performing arts. The first one is;
1. Music is a collection of coordinated sounds or sounds. Filipino music had already a
rich and unique musical tradition long before westerners set foot on our native land.
Music was present in every stage of our ancestors’ lives- from birth to death, in
blissful or tragic times.

2. Dance the movement of the body in a rhythmic was, usually to music and within a
given space, for the purpose of expressing and ideas or emotion, releasing energy, or a
simply taking delight in the movement itself.

3. Theatre arts is a collaborative form of fine fine-art that uses live performers to
present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific
place. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through
combinations of gestures, speech, song, music or dance.

Visual Art is an expression of artistic ideas through images, structures, and tactile
work. Some visual artworks are integrated which means it combines several mediums to
create new and unique artwork.
Types of visual arts are the following:
1. Painting
Painting is the expression of ideas and emotions, with the creation of certain
aesthetic qualities, in a two-dimensional visual language. The elements of
paintings are; shapes, lines, colors, tones and textures and these are used in
various way to produce sensations of volume, space, movement, and light on a
flat surface.

2. Sculpture
It is an art form in which hard or plastic materials are worked into three-
dimensional art objects. Filipino sculptors came to be known in the middle of
the 19th century.

3. Photography
Photography began in the country in the 1840s, when photography equipment
was introduced. During the colonial era, photos were used as news media,
tourism, tool for anthropology and documentation, and as a means for the
Spanish and Americans to assert their perceived social status to natives in
support of colonial propaganda. This later changed independent of the
Philippines where photography has been commonly used by people for
personal documentation and commercial use.
Literary Arts are an expression of ideas through writing. It can be
categorized as poetry, prose, and dramas.
Literature, poetry, fiction, essay, and literary / art criticism are the focal points of non-
traditional art literature, usually based on or influenced by the traditional folk (oral) literature
of natives, which focuses heavily on works of art from epics, ethnic mythologies, and related
stories and traditions. In some cultures, calligraphy on different mediums has been used to
create.

The film industry in the Philippines started in 1897. Film is a form of visual art use to
imitate experiences that communicate ideas, stories, of feelings with the use of moving
images. Film and broadcast art focus on the performing arts, writing, production design,
filmmaking, editing, animation, performance, and new media. Filmmakers render moving
pictures that transform into movies. It is a very costly and complicated type of art that
requires several things, such as composing, casting, and editing film sequences until they can
be presented to the public. A full-length film often takes weeks or months to produce.

Architecture is the art and practice of designing and constructing buildings. In relation
to that, Philippine architecture was characterized as simple, rational, and functional. In the
20th century the young Filipino who studied in American colleges and institutes introduced
the neoclassic style in building structures.

Allied arts of Architecture


1. Interior Design
Is an art and science that goes behind creating the interiors of a home. This
process involves creating a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but
also functional. Moreover, interior design takes into account various
technicalities of your space as well.\
2. Landscape
Landscape architecture in the Philippines initially followed the client's
opulence, but in recent years the emphasis has been on habitats and
sustainability. The practice of landscape architecture includes: site analysis,
site inventory, site planning, land planning, planting design, grading, storm
water management, sustainable design, construction specification, and
ensuring that all plans meet the current building codes and local and federal
ordinances.

Design
The art of design is present in all forms of art, whether traditional or non-traditional,
but design arts in the context of non-traditional arts usually emphasize industrial design and
fashion design.
Classification of design
1. Fashion Design
Fashion arts are ancient artistic crafts, with each ethnic group having its own
sense of fashion. Indigenous fashion uses traditional techniques like weaving
and ornamental materials, while Filipino fashion incorporates indigenous
styles and esthetics from trade and colonization. Ilustrado fashion emerged
during the Hispanic era.
2. Industrial Design
Industrial design is a professional service that optimizes product function,
value, and appearance for mutual benefit. It has been crucial in improving the
Philippines' economy, with research and development influencing aesthetics.
Examples include packaging, electronics, cars, kitchen appliances, and
furniture.
