Module Title : CE A-4: Connecting Computer Peripherals

Prerequisites : CE A-3: Computer Parts and Components
Module Objective : This module will cover the different types of connectors and ports
found in the system unit. You will also learn how to connect the
computer peripherals.
Specific Objectives : After completing this module, 80% of students will be able to:

 Identify the different connectors

 Identify the different ports
 Connect computer peripherals in the system unit.
Others : 2 hours
Learning plan:
1. Watch video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdQeU5QTfYE
2. Read the Information Sheet CE A-4: Connecting Computer
Peripherals

Information Sheet :
Connectors
Alternatively referred to as a cord, cable or plug is one or more wires covered in plastic that
transmit power or data between devices or locations.
Two main types of computer connector:
1. Data Cable – provides communication between devices. For example, the data
cable (i.e., DVI, HDMI, or VGA) that connects your monitor to your computer
allow it to display a picture on the monitor. Other popular examples of data
cables are CAT5, IDE/EIDE, SATA, and USB cables.
2. Power Cable - A power cable is any cable that powers the device. For example,
the power cord that connects to your computer and a Molex style cable inside
the computer are both good examples of power cables. Below, is a listing of the
most common types of cables found with computers and electronics and
examples of devices that use them.

Universal Serial Bus Allows a computer to communicate
(USB) A Connector with peripheral and other devices.
USB-connected devices covers
anything from keyboards and mouse,
to music players and flash drives.

USB B Connector/ Printer Connects your printer to the computer.

Connector

Mini USB B Connector Mini-USB, also known as mini-B, is

used with digital cameras and
computer peripherals.

Micro USB B Connector Micro-USB cables are often used to

connect computer peripherals, video
game controllers, and for charging
smartphones.

USB 3.0 Micro-B This new standard offers increased

SuperSpeed Connector transfer rates up to 4.8Gbps, increased
maximum bus power, improved power
management, and new connectors and
cables that facilitate the higher transfer
speeds and additional power.

USB Type C USB Type – C is the latest

specification of the USB and is a
reversible connector. USB Type – C is
supposed to replace Types A and B
and is considered future proof.

This feature of handling high current is

used in the latest Fast Charging
Technology where a Smart Phone’s
battery will reach its full charge is very
less time.

High Definition Multimedia Short for High Definition Multimedia

Interface (HDMI) Interface, HDMI is a connector and
cable capable of transmitting high-
quality and high-bandwidth streams of
audio and video between devices. The
HDMI technology is used with devices
such as an HDTV, Projector, DVD
player, or Blu-ray player.
DisplayPort, abbreviated DisplayPort cables are very similar to
as DP, is a digital audio high-speed HDMI in terms of
and video interface bandwidth, but can have a much higher
created by VESA. refresh rate at peak resolution (60 Hz
vs. HDMI's 24 Hz). A DisplayPort-to-
HDMI converter cable is available, to
connect a DisplayPort to an HDMI port.

Local Area Network (LAN) Connects your computer to the internet

Cable or to a network device.

Audio cable A cable used to transfer analog or

digital signals from an audio source to
an amplifier or powered speaker.

The 3.5mm stereo audio cables are

designed for use in computer audio
applications. They are typically used to
connect a PC sound card, mini stereo
audio device, or a portable CD player
to a multimedia speaker.

Video Graphics Adapter Connects a computer to a monitor,

(VGA) Connector projector, or TV.

Digital Visual Interface DVI is a video display interface. It was

(DVI) Connector developed to be an industry standard
for transmitting digital video content to
display devices at resolutions as high
as 2560 x 1600. Common devices that
utilize the DVI connection are computer
monitors and projectors.

If your monitor and video card support

both DVI and VGA, we suggest using a
DVI cable. With DVI (digital), the
picture quality is always be at least
equal to VGA (analog), and possibly
better.
Parallel Cable The parallel port is found on the back
of IBM compatible computers and is a
25-pin (type DB-25) computer interface
commonly used to connect printers to
the computer.

Serial Connector Connect a serial device to the

computer and capable of transmitting
one bit at a time. Serial ports are
usually identified on IBM compatible
computers as COM (communications)
ports. For example, a mouse might
connect to COM1 and a modem to
COM2.

With the introduction of USB, FireWire,

and other faster solutions serial ports
are rarely used compared to how often
they've been used in the past. Also,
many new computers and laptops no
longer have a serial port.

PS/2 Keyboard Connector The PS/2 (Personal System/2) port,

also referred to as the keyboard port. It
is used to connect a computer
keyboard to an IBM compatible
computer. The PS/2 port contains six
pins and is still sometimes found on all
IBM compatible computers.

PS/2 Mouse Connector The PS/2 (Personal System/2) port,

also referred to as the mouse port. It is
used to connect a computer mouse to
an IBM compatible computer. The PS/2
port contains six pins and is still
sometimes found on all IBM compatible
computers.

Power cable A power cable is an electrical cable, an

assembly of one or more electrical
conductors, usually held together with
an overall sheath.

There are five speeds for USB data transfer: Low Speed, Full Speed, High Speed (from
version 2.0 of the specification), SuperSpeed (from version 3.0), and SuperSpeed+ (from
version 3.1)
You can generally tell the difference between USB 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 by color alone. While the
size and shape may be identical, the key is to look at the color of the plastic inside the device.
The USB 1.0 features a white plastic color, while USB 2.0 is black, and the USB 3.0 is blue.
Basic Ports
In computer hardware, a port serves as an interface between the computer and other
computers or peripheral devices. In computer terms, a port generally refers to the
part of a computing device available for connection to peripherals such as input and
output devices.
