***Sa Labas ng Kadakilaan: Pagsisiyasat sa mga Pag-ibig ng mga Bayani ng Pilipinas***

First, I am so grateful that we had this chance to watch this amazing show once in our high school
life. Bayani Love is a once in a lifetime play you can never watch or read anywhere. I was surprised
there are this uncut story that was not detailed or not indicated in history books about the love
stories of some of our Filipino heroes. All I know is that they just fought and fought for our freedom
and do not have the time to fall in love. So, here’s my reflection on this wonderful show that I just
watched.

We’ve known Lapu-Lapu as the strong hero who fought with Magellan, but we never knew he had a
love interest by the name of beautiful Bulakna. They are the ideal love story that we imagined. But
eventually, like in normal life, the couple experienced hardships, challenges and tragedy that led to
just abandoning their child. Their story is quite the same during this time, problems sometimes
separated couples and ended with a not so happy ending.

Next, our revolutionary leader Diego Silang and our girl-hero Gabriela Silang. Gabriela was first
married to rich man, Don Tomas Milian who eventually died at young age of their marriage life. Then
she met Diego and joined his revolutionary against the Spaniards. When Diego Silang died, Gabriela
continued to fight and took his husband’s place to lead the people against the Spaniards. She was
then known, Heneralan” meaning a general woman. Though her love of her life was taken from her
early, she still continues his legacy- loving and fighting for our motherland.

Antonio Luna, Nellie Boustead and Jose Rizal’s love story was quite interesting. Love triangle as what
we called that this present time. Antonio first met Nellie and got involved with her. There was just a
time that he needed to leave for Barcelona. Then came Rizal who also met her in Paris and many
thought that they had fallen in love. When Antonio returns from Madrid, he notices that Nellie is
now indifferent, and it seems something has changed in her feelings towards him. His guess was
right, Nellie was in love with someone, and the worst thing is that she’s in love with his friend who
once saved him, Jose Rizal. Rizal and Nellie did not end up as lovers, but only as friends when they
parted as Rizal left Europe.

Juan Luna marries the love of his life Maria de la Paz de Tavera in 1886. After marrying, they sailed to
Europe, and two years earlier, Luna had created the "Spoliarium," which won one of several gold
medals. Luna and Paz de Tavera lived happily for the first few years of their marriage. Life in Paris was
romantic. Juan Luna is a jealous man and he never wanted Paz to talk with anyone aside from him.
He once hurt Paz because of jealousy to man name Monsieur Dussaq and eventually killed her
because of the same reason. Juan was imprisoned for this crime. Their story was not a good ending
for two people who we thought had so much love for each other.
Finally, who doesn’t want to get interested in Jose Rizal’s love story? It all started when Josephine
accompanied her blind father to Jose Rizal, an ophthalmologist. Although Rizal was not able to
restore her father’s sight, he and Josephine fell in love. Their attempts at getting a church-sanctioned
marriage were either denied or ignored because of Rizal’s politics. More calamities befell the couple
when Rizal was sentenced to death. On the day of his execution, Rizal and Josephine married in Fort
Santiago.

Seems like a perfect love story for Rizal, but I remember my mother telling me stories that Rizal has
some more other love interest every time he travels to different places and countries.

That was such a romantic play for me, I was lost for a moment and travelled back to the past and my
mind kept on imagining all these things and scenes that I was watching as of this moment. I just
wanted to stay in the past for a few more minutes even if the play had ended. Their love stories are
unforgettable and very different to this of our modern time. Our heroes, despite the burdens they
are carrying with us under the colony of another country and even though they are so busy getting
the freedom we deserve, they never forget that they still have the right to fall in love. They never
forget to see that there are beautiful women those time and worth loving for.

The play will forever remind me that in life there is always balance for everything. That in life, no
matter how hard it is, we can still be loved and be in love. That we can always choose our heart
above all. The play we watched is something that will forever remain in me and tell the story to my
kids and grand kids in the future. I want them to remember how our heroes are not only heroes by
arms but also heroes by heart.
