What can you say about the picture?

A picture of a tricycle and a jeep.
Based on the picture being shown, which do
you think has greater mass, is it the tricycle
or the jeep?
The Jeep has greater mass.
Which of them travels faster?

C. Presenting To understand more about momentum, you
examples/Instances of are going to watch a video clip
the new lesson (https://youtu.be/DoxkySFRrxI). While
watching, you are going to take notes and
then answer given guide questions in your
worksheet.

(The students will watch the video clips and

answer the questions in their answer sheet.)
(See attached worksheet 1.1.)
D. Discussing new Based on the shown video clip, what is
concepts and momentum?
Momentum is described as mass in motion.
practicing new skills #
1
Exactly! Momentum is the difficulty faced
(15 mins.) by an object or moving body to undergo a
sudden stop. Does an object have momentum
if it is not moving or stationary?
There is no momentum.
Very good! We can only say that an object
has momentum if it is moving. In the video
clip, the bicycle and the semi-truck have the
same speed, which of them has more
momentum?
The semi-truck has more momentum!
Why do you say so?

The semi-truck has more momentum because

it is very massive!
Very good! How will you describe then the
momentum of the bicycle?
The bicycle has lesser momentum.
Why did you say that the bicycle has lesser
momentum?
The bicycle has lesser momentum because it
has less mass.
To understand it better, let’s look at the given
situation.
A tricycle travels at 5 m/s and a jeep travel at
5 m/s also. Which do you think has greater
momentum?

The jeep because it is more massive than a

Very good! For objects moving at the same tricycle.
velocity, a more massive object has greater
inertia in motion, therefore greater
momentum. So, what is the relationship
between momentum and mass?

The momentum of an object is directly

As mass increases or decreases, it will proportional to its mass at the same velocity.
follow. What if the objects have different
velocities? Analyze this situation! Consider

two identical cars having different velocities.

Car A is traveling at 12 m/s while Car B is
traveling a 15 m/s. Which of the two cars is
more difficult to stop and has more
momentum?

same mass. So, what is the relationship
between momentum and velocity?

Very good! If the velocity increases, then

They are directly proportional to each other.
momentum also increases.
How will you describe the momentum then if
the two objects differ in mass and velocity?
Watch this video clip.

Do they have the same momentum?

(Students will watch the video clips.)

Exactly! Momentum is a property of an

object that depends on its mass and velocity.
They do not have the same momentum.
It can be defined as the product of an object’s
mass and velocity, a measure of its motion.
What are the two factors affecting the
momentum of an object then?

Very good! The momentum of an object is

directly proportional to its mass. This means Mass and velocity affect the momentum of an

greater momentum than an object with a
smaller mass moving at the same velocity.
How about in terms of velocity?

The momentum of an object is also directly

Very good! Take note that momentum can be proportional to its velocity. This means that

mass.

Momentum, on the other hand, is a property the force acting on an object is equal to the
of an object that depends on its mass and rate of change of its momentum.
velocity. It can be defined as the product of
an object's mass and velocity, a measure of
its motion. The relationship between
momentum and Newton's Second Law of
Motion can be seen in the equation for force,
which is:

Force = Mass x Acceleration

If we multiply both sides of this equation by

time, we get:

Force x time = Mass x Acceleration x time

But Mass x Acceleration x time is equal to

the change in momentum of the object, since
momentum is the product of mass and
velocity, and acceleration is the rate of
change of velocity. So, we can rewrite the
equation as:

Force x time = Change in momentum

This equation shows that the force applied to

an object over a period is equal to the change
in momentum of the object.
E. Discussing new This time let us use the formula for
concepts and momentum. Based on the shown video clip
practicing new skills # that you’ve watched, what is the formula
used for momentum?
2
(10 mins.)
p=mv
What does each variable symbolize?
The mathematical formula for momentum is
p=mv, where p is the momentum, m is mass,
and v is velocity.

Very good! As for the units to be used, the

unit of mass is kg, and velocity is m/s,
combining these two units, what would be
the units to use for momentum? kg m/s

Look at the figure. Based on the triangle

method, if p=mv, what is the formula for
getting mass?
m=p/v
In another way, using p=mv, divide both
sides of the equation by v, and you will get
m=p/v. How about the formula for velocity?
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
Division of Apayao

Using again p=mv, divide both sides of the

equation by m, and you will get v=p/m.
Applying these equations, let us solve. For v=p/m
example,
A ball is rolling on the floor at a velocity of
10 m/s with a mass of 15 kg, find its
momentum.

Given: m=15 kg, v=10m/s

But what if the problem is like this? Unknown= momentum
A bicycle has a momentum of 50 kg m/s with
a weight of 14500 g. How fast the car is? p=mv = (15 kg) (10 m/s) = 150 kg m/s
What is the first thing to do before solving
the value of velocity?

To convert, in one kilogram there is 1000

grams.
Convert first the value of mass, from g to kg.
14500 g x (1 kg / 1000 g) = 14.5 kg
After conversion, is it ready to solve for the
value of velocity?

Yes.
Given: p=50 kg m/s, m=14.5 kg

Remember that for the final answer, you Unknown=velocity

need to round up or round down in the
v=p/m = 50 kg m/s / 14.5 kg) = 3.45 m/s
nearest tenths or two decimals’ places. So,
when do we say that we need to round up or
round down?

Round it up if the value is 5-9 and round

down if it is 4-0.

F. Developing mastery. For your next activity, the same group will
(5 mins.) apply. I’ll distribute the answer sheet and
then answer it. Your groupings were based
on your performance last meeting, so you are
expected that you are going to answer
differently from each group. Answer your
activity in less than 5 minutes only. Once
you are done, pass your answer and arrange
your chair silently.
