A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 8 SCIENCE

Topic Periodic Table of Elements

Subtopic Development of Periodic Table and Chemical Behavior of Element
Grade Level Grade 8
Time 60 minutes
Allotment
I.OBJECTIVES
Content Standards: The periodic table of elements as an organizing tool to determine the chemical
properties of elements.
Learning Competencies with LC Code:

1. Trace the development of the periodic table from observations based on similarities in properties of
elements.
2. Use the periodic table to predict the chemical behavior of an element.
(S8MT-IIIg-h-11 to S8MT-IIIi-j-12)

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

1. Trace the history of the periodic table of elements.
2. Determine the group, series, types, energy level, valence electron, electron configuration of
elements using the Periodic Table of Elements.
3. Be familiarized with the name and symbol of elements.

II. CONTENT
Subject Matter: Development of Periodic Table and Chemical Behaviour of Element

Subject Integration:
a. Mathematics- Learners will able to compute for half shell/ energy level and electron configuration of
elements.
b. Filipino- Learners will be able to use also Filipino terms in their presentation if cannot be expressed
in English language.
c. English- Learners will be able to perform through oral presentation and poem.
d. MAPEH- Learners will be able to compose a song on the contributions of scientist given.
e. TLE- Learners should maintain the cleanliness of their working area. (Integration of RA 9003), ICT
Integration ( Video clips & Power point presentation)
f. EsP- Learners will develop the sense of cooperation, unity and teamwork in doing and performing
varied activities assigned by the teacher.
g. AP- Students identify the group, series, types, & group name of elements using the legends from the
periodic table.

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

A.References
1. Teacher’s Guide: pp. 151
2. Learner’s Guide: pp. 216-217
3. Materials: white board, marker, Periodic Table of Elements, notebook, pen, INNOVATIVE
LEARNING MODULE

IV.PROCEDURES
PRELIMINARIES (2min)
 Greetings of students
 Daily Routine (Classroom Management/ Setting of standards)
 The teacher post on the screen the House Rules for today’s lesson/ activity.
 Students pick up litters in the area where they are seated. (RA 9003)

A. ELICIT (10 min)

ACTIVITY: What’s the Element?

(This activity aims to master the symbol and name of the element)
 The teacher starts the recalling activity through Group Game. (Similar to Game ka na Ba?)
 Every group will have one representative to play the game.
(Group 1 vs Group 2, Group 3 vs Group 4)
 If the teacher tells the symbol of the element, student will tell the name of that element, and if the
name of the element is given the student will give its symbol.
 The first representative who could answer it correctly will forward from the circle.
 The first representative who could step on the 4th circle will be the winner.

B. ENGAGE (10 min)

ACTIVITY: Locate me!

 Unlocking of words: Series/ Period, Group/ Family

 Students will identify the group and series of the given element. Students will use a periodic table.
a. Ra e. Mn
b. K f. Zn
c. Sc g. Ba
d. Cr h. Rn

C. EXPLORE (10 min)

ACTIVITY: What You Need to Know! (Development of the Periodic Table)

Direction: Name all the contributions of the different notable chemists towards the development of periodic
table.
 Encourage learners’ active participation in the activity. Cooperation, unity and teamwork are
recommended in doing the activity.
 Students are given equal opportunities to express their thoughts and opinions during the
presentation.
SCIENTISTS CONTRIBUTIONS

JOHANN WOLFGANG DOBEREINER

JOHN NEWLANDS

DMITRI MENDELEEV

HENRY MOSELY

GROUP 1 Present the contributions of Johann Wolfgang Dobereiner through Poem.

GROUP 2 Present the contributions of John Newlands through Oral Presentation.
GROUP 3 Present the contribution of Dmitri Mendeleev through Song.
GROUP 4 Present the contribution of Henry Mosely through Acrostic.

 Criteria or RUBRICS for their performances will be given.

Content ---- 40%
Quality of Performance ---- 30%
Teamwork/ Cooperation ---- 20%
Audience Appeal/ Impact ---- 10%
100%
EXPLAIN (15 min)

 Students will explain through their presentation.

 Students will continue answering their Innovative Learning Module.

ACTIVITY: To where do I Belong?

Direction: Classify the following elements whether they belong to Metals, Non-metals, and Metalloids.
Write you answer in the box.
ACTIVITY: Atom bank

Direction: Draw the valence shell of the following elements and write their electron
configuration.

ELABORATE (8 min)

ACTIVITY: Building Vocabularies

1. This shows the energy regions that an element occupies.

2. The gradual wearing a way of a metal due to interaction with other substances
3. The highest energy level that an electron occupies

4. That the properties of elements vary periodically with atomic number.
