Operating System The computers are shipped with Microsoft licensed Windows XP
Professional, Service Pack 2b operating system installed and
configured.

Multilingual User Interface The Microsoft Multilingual User Interface (MUI) CD Pack contains a
collection of different language sets that can be installed into the
CD Pack operating system. The MUI pack provides a localized start menu and
system icons support.
Before You Begin Before unpacking the product, inspect the shipping carton for
damage. If damage is visible, immediately contact the shipper and
request assistance. Otherwise, proceed with unpacking.
Keep the original packing material in case you need to return the
product for repair or transport it to another location. Use both the
inner and outer packing cartons to provide adequate protection for a
unit returned for service.

Installation
European Union This product meets the European Union Directive requirements when
installed within the European Union or EEA regions and has the CE

ATTENTION
The product is intended to operate in an industrial or control
room environment, which utilizes some form of power isolation
from the public low voltage mains. Some computer
configurations may not comply with the EN 61000-3-2
Harmonic Emissions standard as specified by the EMC Directive
of the European Union. Obtain permission from the local power
authority before connecting any computer configuration that
draws more than 75 watts of ac power directly from the public
mains.
ATTENTION
To comply with EN 55024, the Ethernet port LAN cable must be
less than 30 m (98.42 ft) long, and it must be used only indoors
(that is, not exit the building at any point). All other I/O cables
must be less than 3 m (9.84 ft) long, and must be used only
indoors.
Environment and Enclosure Review the information on enclosures and environments before
installing your computer.
Information
ATTENTION This equipment is intended for use in a Pollution Degree 2
environment, in overvoltage Category II applications (as defined
in IEC publication 60664-1), at altitudes up to 2000 meters
(6562 feet) without derating. The enclosure door must be
closed.
This equipment is considered Group 1, Class A equipment
according to IEC/CISPR Publication 11. Without appropriate
precautions, there may be potential difficulties ensuring
electromagnetic compatibility in other environments due to
conducted as well as radiated disturbance.
Operating the capacitive touchscreen version in a high noise
environment may cause the touchscreen to respond slowly to
touch inputs, or may cause the position of the screen cursor to
drift.
This equipment may be mounted in an enclosure that is suitably
designed to prevent personal injury resulting from accessibility
to live parts. If not mounted inside another enclosure the
mounting method must limit the tilt of the product to +/- 30°
from vertical. Examples include articulated arm, table-top
stand, wall mount, or other means having sufficient mechanical
stability. The mounting means must be firmly attached to the
supporting surface using screws bolts, or clamps so the
computer cannot tip.

Installation Considerations Follow these guidelines to make sure your product provides safe and
reliable service:
TIP Hot air rises. The temperature at the top of the enclosure is
often higher than the temperature in other parts of the
enclosure, especially if air is not circulating.

Mounting the Computer in a You can install the 1200P and 1500P models of the 6180P integrated
display computers with keypad in a panel using mounting clips.

Mounting clips secure the computer to the panel. The 1200P and
1500P both require 10 mounting clips. Follow these steps to mount
the computer in a panel.
ATTENTION
Remove all electrical power from the panel before making
cutout.
Make sure the area around the panel cutout is clear.
Take precautions so metal cuttings do not enter components
already installed in panel.
Failure to follow these warnings may result in personal injury or
damage to the panel components.
5. Slide the mounting clips into the slots on the top, bottom, and
sides of the computer.
The sequence begins with the center clips and continues to the
corner clips. Repeat this process at least three times until the
clips are hand-tight and the gasket is compressed uniformly
against the panel.

Connecting Peripherals The illustration shows the I/O port panel of the computers. Peripheral
components compatible to each port are marked inside the callout
figures.
The 1200P and 1500P computers have USB ports located on both the
I/O port side panel and the front access bay. You can use these ports
to connect various USB devices such as an external USB HDD or
floppy disk drive to the computer. Front USB ports are enabled or
disabled through settings in the BIOS setup menu.
Applying AC Power A grounded 3-prong inlet IEC320-C14 power cord provides power to
the computer. The power supply input accepts 90-264V ac and is
autoswitching.
Applying DC Power The following 6180P models are available with a dc power option
using a 3-screw terminal block (+24VDC, 24VTRN, GND).

ATTENTION Use a Class 2/SELV (safety extra low voltage) isolated and
ungrounded power supply as input power to the computer. This
power source provides protection so that under normal and
single fault conditions, the voltage between the conductors and
Functional Earth/Protective Earth does not exceed a safe value.
Functional Ground Screw The use of the functional ground screw is not required for safety and
regulatory compliance. However, if a supplemental ground is desired,
use the functional ground screw located in the I/O area on the side
panel of the computer..
Connecting to a Network The computers have two Gigabit LAN ports. The computers connect
to an Ethernet network using CAT5 or CAT5E twisted-pair Ethernet
cabling with RJ-45 connectors.
Operation
Chapter Objectives This chapter provides information and procedures on the following

ATTENTION
After shutting the system off, do not move the computer, or turn
it back on again, until the hard drive comes to a complete stop,
which takes about 30 seconds.
Operator Access
ATTENTION
Operator access is limited to the front panel of the copmuter.
This includes the display, keypad, and touchscreen. Access to
components behind the panel in which the computer is installed
is restricted to authorized and properly trained personnel.
Keypad Function Setting The 1200P and 1500P computers with keypad have two settings for
keypad functions. These settings are labeled Set 1 and Set 4.
2. Plug the power cord into the power input on the computer’s
rear panel and into a power source or wall outlet.
4. The first time you turn on the computer you will be asked to
read and accept the End User License Agreement.
If your system does not start up, or you notice other problems, refer to
Troubleshooting.
Restart the System To restart the computer, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and follow the
operating system instructions.
After restarting, the computer begins the Power On Self Test (POST).
During a reset, the computer:
• clears RAM.
• starts the POST.
• initializes peripheral devices, such as drives and printers.
• loads the operating system.
Shut Down the System To shut down the computer, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and follow the
operating system instructions.

Replacement Parts
Review the specifications of a new component before installing it to
make sure it is compatible with the computer. Record the model and
serial number, and any other pertinent information of new
components for future reference.
ATTENTION
To avoid voiding your product warranty, use only Rockwell
Automation Allen-Bradley-approved replacement parts and
accessories.
Electrostatic Discharge
(ESD) Precautions ATTENTION Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage static-sensitive
devices or microcircuitry. Observe proper packaging and
grounding techniques to prevent damage.
Pre-configuration
Procedure IMPORTANT When installing hardware or performing maintenance
procedures requiring access to internal components, we
recommend that you first back up all computer data to avoid
loss.
ATTENTION
Make sure to read and understand the entire
installation/removal procedure first, before you begin
configuring the computer hardware.
1. Turn off the computer and all the peripherals connected to it.
Voltage Precaution The computers contain line voltages. Disconnect all power to the
computer before you install or remove system components.
2. Make sure that no loose tools or parts are left inside the
computer.

• Remove the Rear Cover
Remove the Rear Cover To maintain, install, or upgrade computer components, you must first
remove the rear cover.
TIP Use a wrist strap connected to the work surface and properly
grounded tools and equipment.
2. Loosen and remove the nine screws holding the back cover on
the chassis.

Reinstall the Rear Cover Follow these steps to reinstall the rear cover.
3. Place the nine screws and tighten them to hold the back cover
on the chassis.

Replace the Hard Disk You can replace the default hard disk drive (HDD) or install a hard
drive in the empty HDD bay. The computers have two HDD bays for
Drive installing hot-swap SATA HDD modules.
ATTENTION
Mechanical shock can damage a hard drive. Do not drop or
bump the hard disk drive.
TIP Use a wrist strap connected to the work surface and properly
grounded tools and equipment.

the default one, proceed to step 6.
4. Remove the four screws from the bottom of the HDD assembly
carrier.

3. Locate and remove the security screw below the optical disc
drive. Set screw aside.

7. Lay the new HDD module with the PCB-side down into the
carrier.

8. Secure the secondary HDD module with the four screws and
slide the assembly into its bay.
Replace the Floppy Disk Follow these precautions when working with the floppy disk drive
(FDD).
Drive • Do not touch internal components.
• Always handle the floppy drive by its metal frame.
• Store the floppy drive in an anti-static bag when it is not
installed.
• Never disconnect or install a floppy drive with the power on.
Follow these steps to remove the default floppy disk drive (FDD).
TIP Use a wrist strap connected to the work surface and properly
grounded tools and equipment.

1. Slide the new floppy drive into the drive cage from the front,
aligning the side screw holes.

Replace the Optical Disc You can replace the default optical disc drive (ODD).

2. Remove the default optical drive from the system drive cage.
a. Remove the two screws from the left side of the drive.
– Keep the two screws. You will need them to install the new
optical disc drive.
b. Use a flat plastic screwdriver to nudge the ODD forward.
c. Slide the ODD out of the system drive cage.
1. Slide the new optical disc drive into the drive cage from the
front, aligning the side screw holes.
2. Secure the drive with the two screws you removed in step 2b of
the previous section.
Install an Expansion Board The system board of the computers support the following expansion
slots.

IMPORTANT Do not discard the slot cover. If the expansion board is removed
in the future, the slot cover must be reinstalled to maintain
proper cooling.
7. Hold the expansion board by its edges and remove it from its
protective packaging.

Replace a Memory Module The system board of the computers has two dual-channel DDR-II
DIMM slots that support up to 2 GB per slot with 4.0 maximum system
memory.
Memory Configuration Follow these guidelines when adding memory to the computers.
Guidelines • Use only standard unbuffered memory modules that conform to
both PC2-5300 and Serial Presence Detect (SPD) compliance
industry standards.
• Use only DDR-II type memory modules.
• Use only gold-plated lead memory modules.
• Always handle the memory modules by its edges.
TIP Use a wrist strap connected to the work surface and properly
grounded tools and equipment.
6. Hold the memory module by its edge and remove it from its
protective packaging.
b. Push the module at both ends to seat it fully into the slot.
The holding clips will automatically lock into place once the
module has been seated.

Diagnostic Utility If you followed the troubleshooting procedure and are still having
problems, use the industrial computer diagnostic utility to isolate the
problem. This utility determines the cause of the malfunction by
testing computer components.
Maintenance
ATTENTION Make sure the isopropyl alcohol does not come in contact with
the equipment labels. Alcohol may cause the label printing to
smear.
Replace the RTC Battery The computers use nonvolatile memory that require a battery to retain
system information when power is removed. The 3V, 200 mAh lithium
battery is on the system board.
Battery
If the computer does not display the correct time and date, replace the
battery.
IMPORTANT Loss of BIOS settings occurs when the battery is removed. BIOS
settings must be reconfigured whenever the battery is
replaced.
WARNING
A risk of fire and chemical burn exists if the battery is not
handled properly. Do not disassemble, crush, puncture, or short
external contacts, or expose the battery to temperatures higher
than 60 °C (140 °F). Do not dispose of a used battery in water or
fire.
ATTENTION
When replacing the system battery:
• replace the battery with the same type as the default one. Use of
another battery may present a risk of fire or explosion.
• dispose of used batteries according to manufacturer's instructions
for the battery.
a. Turn off the computer and all the peripherals connected to it.
b. Unplug all cables from the power outlets to avoid exposure to
high energy levels.
If necessary, label each one to expedite reassembly.
IMPORTANT Do not bend the spring latch when replacing the RTC battery.
For proper operation, the latch must retain contact with the
battery.

6. Insert the new battery with the positive polarity (+ side) facing
up, and make sure that it is seated completely.
Backlight Assembly

ATTENTION
The backlight assembly in this unit contains mercury. At the end
of its life, this equipment should be collected separately from
any unsorted municipal waste.
Transport the Product If you need to ship your computer via common carrier or otherwise
transport it to another location, you must first uninstall the unit from
the panel and place it in its original packing material.
ATTENTION
Do not ship or transport the product when it is installed in a
machine, panel or rack. Doing so may cause damage to the
product. You must uninstall the product and place in its original
packing material before shipping. Rockwell Automation is not
responsible for damage incurred to a product that is shipped or
transported while installed in a machine, panel, or rack.

Resistive Touchscreen Resistive touchscreens are activated when you apply pressure to the
touchscreen with your finger. You can operate a resistive touchscreen
Technology while wearing gloves.
ATTENTION
Do not use sharp instruments to activate the touchscreen.
Scratching the surface of the touchscreen could damage the
unit.
Calibrate the Touchscreen The touchscreen supplied with the computer is factory installed and
calibrated.
BIOS Update Procedure Sometimes a new BIOS is released to enhance the performance of
your computer (to make it compatible with new hardware/software
releases), or to correct a defect. In such cases, you can download the
new BIOS and update your computer. Download the BIOS update
from the Rockwell Automation website http://www.ab.com/industrial

Installation Assistance

operational when shipped from the manufacturing facility. However, if your
