4 Conversions

4.1 Important information

A Heartbeat verification with report is recommended following an alteration.
Heartbeat verification is enabled for the Expert user role (service activation code:
"4685").

4.2 General guidelines for conversion

• Conversions require a new nameplate or a modification nameplate. This ensures that
both the order code and the order ID on the housing match the modified device
• Conversions must be documented in the CER (Common Equipment Recorder) by the
service technician. The relevant Sales Center is responsible for the correct CER
• Conversions are only possible with original spare parts from Endress+Hauser, which
have already been designated as such by the manufacturer
• The service technician must enter the changed order code and order ID into the device
software. The adjustment can be performed via FieldCare and the Service access
authorization level
• The factory data set is not valid for conversions in the field that require adjustment of
device data. Following a device reset, the parameters stored in the factory are applied
whereby all data adjustments are discarded
• Conversions of Ex-systems may only be performed by Endress+Hauser Service
• Conversions of SIL approved instruments are only permitted as per description. The
instructions in the "Functional Safety Manual" must be followed

4.3 Conversions that are not possible

• Conversions are generally not possible on devices with FM, CSA or JPN ex approvals
• For safety reasons (component aging), it is not possible to convert devices older than 10
years
• Conversions are not possible on devices with shipbuilding certificates
• Conversions of modified devices (Y/9 in the order code) are only possible following prior
clarification with the Endress+Hauser Calibration and Service Center
• Conversions of devices with WHG approval are not permitted
• Switching between types of protection is not permitted

Gammapilot FMG50 Final inspection

6 Final inspection
Once the spare part has been replaced, carry out a high-voltage test.
This requires the use of a high-voltage testing device with the following characteristics:
• Output voltage depending on the device version:
• Devices without overvoltage protection: 500 VAC or 707 VDC
• Devices with overvoltage protection: 410 VDC (lower testing voltage, otherwise
discharge tubes will ignite)
• Tripping current: 2.5 mA; discharge time 1.5 s
• Rise time of testing voltage: 2 s
• Hold time of testing voltage: 60 s

6.1 Preparation
Prior to performing the high-voltage test, use an ohmmeter to verify that there is
minimum contact resistance (0.1 Ω) between the PAL connectors and the housing. At the
terminals of the FMG50, use a wire jumper to short-circuit the signal circuits as illustrated
in the diagrams.

LDANGER
Danger! High voltage!
‣ During the test, place the device on an insulated surface, without ground connection.

1) Diagnostic behavior can be changed.

Diagnostic number F007:

The diagnostic behavior for this event can either be alarm or warning
• Alarm: The sensor electronics are defective and must be replaced
• Warning: The sensor's high-voltage regulation is impaired as long as a warning is
displayed due to excessively low radiation (e.g., in the case of low background
radiation). This message disappears once again when the radiation is sufficient and
no further measures are necessary.
Diagnostic number F825:
The diagnostic behavior can either be alarm or warning depending on the sensor
version
• In the case of NaI (Tl) scintillators, the diagnostic behavior is always warning:
• if +80 °C is exceeded
• if –40 °C is undershot
• In the case of PVT scintillators, the diagnostic behavior is:
• Alarm: if +65 °C is exceeded
• Warning: if +60 °C is exceeded or –40 °C is undershot
• In the case of PVT (HT) scintillators, the diagnostic behavior is:
• Alarm: if –25 °C is undershot
• Warning: if +80 °C is exceeded or –20 °C is undershot
Diagnostic number 955:

7.5 Diagnostic tests

7.5.1 Checking instrument function using Heartbeat verification

1. Login as Expert (service code 4685). This temporarily activates the Heartbeat
function even on devices which, according to their order code, do not have Heartbeat
verification.
2. Run the Heartbeat verification wizard. The Heartbeat verification wizard carries out a
diagnosis of the mainboard module and sensor module of the device and presents the
results in a verification report.
3. Analysis of the verification report: If one of the diagnostics fails, the affected
component must be replaced if necessary. Photomultiplier HV value: If current HV
values > 1 000 V the photomultiplier should be replaced if possible as a precautionary
measure. To compensate for the aging of the photocathode of the photomultiplier,
the HV value is readjusted to between 400 to 1 300 V. Max sensor temperature: If
the max. sensor temperature shows a value < +60 °C (+140 °F) (standard PVT) or <
+80 °C (+176 °F) (HT-PVT), scintillator defects due to the temperature effect cannot
be ruled out.

7.5.2 Checking signal behavior during irradiation

By way of additional verification, the sensor behavior can be checked during irradiation. As
a test source, the test tube available in the service case (order number: 71457678) is
attached to the sensor tube. After the test tube has been attached, the measured pulse rate
at the detector must increase. Alternatively, a different radiation source can be used for
testing.
