A letter to a loved one…

Characters: Students 1-5 (5), Mr. Sinesh, Ms. Chris (total = 7, disregarding event
hosts/presenters, dancers)

SCENE 1- IN THE CLASSROOM

[Characters: Students 1-3 (3), Mr. Sinesh]
( It’s Founder’s Day. All the students are dressed in pink and seated in the classroom, chatting with
each other. The teacher walks in jauntily and softly hums to himself. All the students turn attention to
him.)

Student 1: Mr. Sinesh, you look so chipper today, what’s up? Were our papers that good???

Mr. Sinesh: Unfortunately, no… I haven’t corrected them yet *Grins*. Today is Founder’s Day! One
of the most important days for Diyafah.

(Breaks eye contact with the student and looks around the class)

A day to celebrate. A day to smile and laugh! Wouldn’t you agree?

Student 2: *Jokingly* We would agree if we got free lessons all day. I wouldn’t mind missing double
chem!

(Students look at Mr. Sinesh with big smiles)

Mr. Sinesh: ________, Settle down. Unlucky for you, there will still be lessons today. But hey, keep a
high spirit. We do have some lovely activities planned for you guys this morning.

(Student 2 slumps his shoulders and sits down)

Mr. Sinesh: Now, can anyone tell me why we celebrate the 3rd of November every year at Al Diyafah?

(Class is silent for a bit out of confusion)

Student 3: Was that the day Diyafah was founded??

Mr. Sinesh: Precisely.

Student 1: Oh YEAAH! So, we spend the day honouring the memory of our founder, Ms. Winnie
D’Cunha.

Mr. Sinesh: Exactly! The first activity for today is actually for all of you to write a letter to Ms. Winnie
D’Cunha. Imagine she would read it. What would you say to her?

Student 2: Well, this should be easy enough… we know all a bit about Ms. Winnie D’Cunha! I mean,
we have celebrated this day before.

Student 1: Yeah, but maybe we should still do some research to help us write the letter. I remember
some of our seniors had interviewed teachers about Ms. Winnie D’Cunha, maybe we can use some of
that.

(Starts looking into Ms. Winnie D’Cunha’s life and learns about how she impacted the school)
Student 1: Wow! I knew that Ms. D’Cunha was an influential person but I never realised how integral
she is to this school… From the looks of it, she seems to have impacted everyone who has met or even
heard of her.

Student 2: Exactly! It’s great to see that her principles are still being carried forward by the school
today. Makes me appreciate her a lot more now…

Student 1: Alright, time to start writing! Hmmmm. Dear Ms. D’Cunha…

(Magical music sound effect thing)

SCENE 2A: A TEACHER’S HEART

(Student 1 is writing the letter thoughtfully. Voiceover of her thoughts.)
Student 1 Voiceover: I know I’ve never met you before, but I feel like I know you so well. I’ve been at
Diyafah for 12 years now, and in every corner of this school, I have always seen your positive energy
beam!

Your vision. Your passion. Your attitude towards learning. Nothing has changed.

Every brick and wall of this school is glued together by your honesty and dedication. And every
Diyafite- be it teachers or students- carry the kindness you put into our world.

It’s so evident in the way my teachers treat me, that you didn’t create a formal institution for learning-
you created a family! A family of people who teach each other, learn from each other, and support
each other no matter what.

SCENE 2B – SIDE SCENE 1

[Characters: Students 4-5 (2), Ms. Chris]
Student 4: Hi Ms. Chris! Sorry, I couldn’t reply to your message on teams- my laptop died.

Ms. Chris: Oh, really? When is the funeral?

Student 4: Miss!

Ms. Chris: Okay sit down quickly. I have got permission for you to write your assessment now as you
will not be there during my English lesson. This break time is all you have got.

Student 5: Oh miss, but ____ was saying she is hungry. She hasn’t eaten all day long.

Student 4: No no, don’t worry about it. I’ll try to grab a bite later. This is more important.

(Student 5 leaves. Student 4 starts writing the test. Ms. Chris reaches into her bag and pulls out an
orange and starts peeling it. She feeds it to Student 4.)

Student 4: Oh no, miss. It’s fine. You don’t have to do that. What will you eat then?

Ms. Chris: Keep quiet and eat. I’ll buy something from the canteen. I’ll deduct 5 marks from your
paper if you argue with me about this. Besides, it is your time you are wasting.

(Student 4 hugs Ms. Chris)

Student 4: Awww, miss. I love you!

(Student 4 continues writing the test)

SCENE 3A: CELEBRATING EVERY SMALL WIN
Student 1 Voiceover: You know, Ms. D’Cunha, we recently celebrated our 40 years concert. It was an
epic success! On such occasions, we miss you the most.

I’ve heard stories of how much you used to love celebrating such occasions. How excited you used to
get when our school would host an event, or our students would put up a show. I promise you; we’ve
preserved that energy and try our level best to help it reflect on every occasion worth celebrating.

SCENE 3B- SIDE SCENE 2

[Characters: Students 4-5 (2)]

(Student 4 is a member of the student council)

Student 4: Oh, my goddd! There is so much to do. Teachers’ day is just around the corner and we
have got nothing done. I don’t know how well the skit and dance are coming along. I have the
compering script to write! We have to get the goody bags ready. And I have my monthly tests next
week. Literally, no time to do anything! I want to cry.

Student 5: _____, CALM DOWN!

Student 4: You’re right. I have no time to cry. I’ll just pull an all-nighter and get all my work done.

Student 5: That is not what I meant! Listen to me. You know why we celebrate such events? It’s not
going to get us a medal or some shiny trophy. All of these are to create memories that we will forever
cherish. Doing it in with so much stress isn’t going to achieve anything, it might just make things
worse! Remember Ms. Geetha was telling us how Ms. D’Cunha used to love celebrating such events
and it brought so much joy to her day just to plan it all out? That’s the mindset we need to have!
That’s what all of this is about, enjoying ourselves and making sure others do too. Don’t treat it like a
burden… treat it like an opportunity.

Student 4: Yea, I guess you’re right. I might have been taking it too seriously, need to relax and be
optimistic instead of panicking about every little thing.

Student 5: Yesssss. It’s all about enjoying the process, gurllll.

Student 4: When did you become so wise and inspirational, huh?

Student 5: *Shrugs* I have always been, what are you saying???

(Both students giggle and hug)

SCENE 4A: STRIVE TO CONQUER

Student 1 Voiceover: Ms. D’Cunha, I dream to become to a dancer. Initially, I was very hesitant to
commit to such an unconventional career goal, but your story truly inspired me.

I know your parents, just like mine, wanted you to become a doctor. But you decided to follow your
heart and educate young minds. And I, on first hand, can confirm that that decision has changed the
lives of thousands of kids for the better. If you can do it, so can I, right?

It was the little world you spent countless hours creating that provided me with the safe space to
unleash my true potential for dance. Thank you so much!

Words cannot express the gratitude my heart feels for you. I hope I can make you proud by following
my passion in life. By performing to express and communicate…
