SCIENCE AND ITS WONDERS

T he advent of computers has come to solve the difficulties encountered during the use of the
type writers. Some of the difficulties encountered were to type scientific formulae and
symbols like:
=∞
𝑖=1 𝑋𝑖,
2
𝐻2 𝑂, 𝐻2 𝐶5 𝑂𝐻 , (𝑋 + 5) ,
𝑥
2
𝑦
𝑝

C C O E
S R H R R
A I R E I
N S I N A
D T S T L
R H E T I C
A A L I A
L N E
N G O E M A R I

To fully understand this new technology, it is important for one to review the definitions of some of
the key concepts such as:
 Data: Raw facts and figures that are processed into information
 Information: Data that has been summarised or otherwise manipulated for use in decision
making
 Network: Communications system connecting two or more computers
 Download: The transmission of data from a remote computer to a local computer
 Upload: the transmission of data from a local computer to a remote computer
 Softcopy: Data that is shown on a display screen or is in audio or video form
 Hardcopy: this is the printed copy of documents
o Save your work and close
o Take a print screen of the work and paste in a blank word document
o Present your work to your teacher for evaluation

PROJECT 2

The table below shows savings by members of a „Njangi‟ group for three months. Each
member has to save twice in a month. Create the following table using a suitable word
processor, and save it in a folder you have created on your desktop. Equally save all
subsequent tasks in this same folder.

discount rate of 2.5% was allowed on each items‟ total sales price. Calculate the discount
amount for each item.
5) Include a column heading after DISCOUNT and name it VAT. Calculate VAT i.e 19.25%
of T.SALES
6) Include another heading after the VAT called NET SALES. Enter a formula to calculate
the net sales for each item
7) Calculate the row headings i.e TOTALS, NO OF ITEMS, LEAST
8) Include a heading after NET SALES and name it PROFIT. Calculate the profit for each
item
9) Present the ITEMS, U.COST and T.SALES column on a column chart. That should
appear on a new spread sheet.

Overall Total Savings

Tasks
1) Create a workbook called NJANGI SAVINGS using a suitable spreadsheet application,
and save it in the folder on your desktop. Input the information as it appears in the table
above in a worksheet and call it SAVINGS. The table‟s header row should appear in Row
3 and the Name column should appear in column A.
2) Insert 3 other columns; INTEREST (which calculates the interest returned of 5% for the
total monthly savings), RANK (which ranks the total savings for each month by each
individual, with the highest total savings occupying the first position while the lowest
total savings occupies the last), COMMENT (which produces the comment „delinquent‟
when the total savings is less than or equal to 8000, and regular otherwise). Use
appropriate functions or formulae to calculate the above INTEREST, RANK,
COMMENT
3) Create another worksheet in the same workbook and call it SAVING ANALYSIS. Copy
only the first five columns of your original table of sheet SAVINGS into this worksheet
while making sure that it occupies the same cell positions as the table in sheet SAVINGS.
Leave all the entries of columns SAVINGS1, SAVINGS2, or Total Savings empty
4) Enter formulae into the first cells (i.e cells C4, D4 and E4) of SAVINGS1, SAVINGS2
and Total Savings columns, that links these cells to their corresponding (non-empty) cells
of the table in sheet SAVINGS. Use the auto-fill feature of your application to copy the
formula into the rest of the other cells in these columns.
NB: These formulae should be such that the values in SAVINGS1 and SAVINGS2 of
sheet SAVINGS automatically appear in SAVINGS1 and SAVINGS2 of sheet SAVING
ANALYSIS without necessarily entering them
3) Enter a formula into cell E16 of sheet SAVINGS ANALYSIS, which returns the
Overall Total Savings from the values in the Total Savings column of sheet savings
4) Insert 2 columns and name them: GIFT (A gift 500.000frs was to be shared by the
above names.), SHARE ( the gift was shared amongst the 4 members in the ratio
4:3:2:1). Calculate the share of each member.
- Save your work and close
- Take a print screen of the work and paste in a blank word document
- Present your work to your teacher for evaluation

Given that a customer may have more than one account number through which payments for the
products can be made and that two customers can jointly make the same order, use the above table to
carry out the following work:
Task 1:
1. Write the above table in first normal form (1NF)
2. Write down a possible primary key for your table
3. Using a suitable database management system (DBMS) of your choice, create your table of
1NF in design view making use of your primary key. Name your database as Business
records and save your table as tbl Accounts
4. Print your table in datasheet view
5. In your booklet, write down the input mask that will limit the input of an account number to 6
digits (0-9)
6. What are some two problems or limitations that can be faced with tables existing in 1NF?
Task 2:
7. Now write down the above table in second normal form (2NF), including the primary key
used for each table
a. Create these tables in a database called Business Record2 while giving any names of
your choice to the tables you have created but only making sure that these table names
have meanings relative to their corresponding tables. Print the tables you have created
b. Create relationships between the tables you have created (without re-enforcing
referential integrity). Snap the two window displaying the relationships and paste it on
a word processing document. Save this document as Relations and print it.
c. Creat a form that displays all the columns (or field) names of all your tables, which
can be used to enter data into any of the tables. Snap your form and paste in a word
processor. Save your work as Forms and print it.
d. Using the table in1NF above, produce a report which carries the statistics of the table.
Save and print the report(using the name Report)
Task 3:
Using a spreadsheet of your choice, produce the following table on a worksheet and save it as
performance (This is to be imported into your database)
Name 1st Term Average 2nd Term Average 3rd Term Average
Theron 13 4 0
Thelson 17.5 10 18
Thelma 11 13 16.5
Kenneth 12 10.3 7.5
Sylvia 19 15 17
1. Use a feature of your spreadsheet to display only the students having a first term average
being strictly less than 17. Print the display and write in your booklet, the name of the
feature you have used
2. Produce a line chart that displays the statistics given in the original table of this task 3 and
call it performance analysis. Print this chart.
3. Write down the formula you would enter to calculate Theron‟s class average
4. Using your database called Business records of task 1, import table 2 about into this
database. Print this table.
