1 JAZZ MUSIC
Jazz, like other music with different origins, is a type of music with an
African-American origin that started in early 20th century with syncopated beats,
improvised sounds, and a regular and forceful rhythmic pattern. The instruments
that are commonly used in jazz are woodwind instruments, piano, and brass wind
instruments. Sometimes, it uses guitar and violin for swing, jazz, bebop and
Dixieland.
1. Ragtime Jazz - is a popular American music in 1890 until 1915; it has a steady
syncopation and a melody with rhythmic pattern of two-four time.
2. Big Band Jazz - The term ‘Big Band” refers to a large ensemble form originating
in the United States in the mid 1920’s closely associated with the Swing Era with
jazz elements. Relying heavily on percussion (drums), wind, rhythm section (guitar,
piano, double bass, vibes), and brass instruments (saxophones), with a lyrical
string section (violins and other string instruments) to accompany a lyrical melody.
3. Bebop - Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced this kind of musical genre
in the 1940s.
4. Jazz Rock - is the music of 1960’s and 1970’s bands that inserted jazz elements
into rock music. A synonym for “jazz fusion,” jazz rock is a mix of funk and R&B
(“rhythm and blues”) rhythms, where the music used amplification and electronic
effects, complex time signatures, and extended instrumental compositions with
lengthy improvisations in the jazz style.
5
Popular singer/songwriters Joni Mitchell, Tim Buckley, and Van
Morrison were among those who adopted the jazz rock style.
Lesson
POPULAR MUSIC
2
There are many things to be considered about popular music. It belongs to a
variety of genres distributed to a number of audiences through the music industry.
Popular music is commonly preferred by a certain group of people. Age bracket and
location are some of the factors that determine what type of music is popular
among certain people. Some people could choose jazz, pop, rock, or soul depending
on their preference.
Folk Music
refers to melodies and songs of the common people that are handed down
from one generation to the next.
Folk music often expresses the character of the ethnic and social groups,
and sometimes of a nation.
In 1960s and 1970s, folk music took on a new character.
It was combined with elements of rock to express the social and political
concerns of the youth of that era.

dominant languages. However, other ethno-linguistic groups such as the
Visayan, Bikol, Kapampangan, and Ilocano also began to sing and record
