I. Introduction

In today's world, where traffic congestion and environmental concerns are all too
common, the study of traffic flow has become increasingly relevant. According to Levinson et
al. (2021), traffic flow encompasses the intricate movements of individual drivers between two
points and the interactions they have with one another. This concept is further defined by the
interplay of three essential components: flow, density, and velocity. Consequently, it plays a
vital role in the planning, design, and operation of roadway facilities.

The challenge lies in the unpredictable nature of driver behavior, which inevitably
affects our daily lives. Numerous factors influence traffic flow, including congestion, the
presence of traffic signals, and the guidance provided by road signs.

Furthermore, the advent of advanced technology, such as real-time traffic monitoring

through navigation apps, empowers drivers to steer clear of congested routes. This, in turn,
contributes to the reduction of traffic congestion and the maintenance of smoother vehicle flow
on the roads. Traffic engineers employ a range of tools and strategies to optimize traffic flow,
including synchronized traffic signals, lane management, and the implementation of advanced
transportation systems.

In conclusion, comprehending the multifaceted factors that influence traffic flow plays
a pivotal role in enhancing transportation systems. Understanding the fundamentals of traffic
flow and the tactics employed by traffic engineers and city planners can help us navigate our
roadways more efficiently and safely. In essence, it is akin to a symphony of vehicles
harmonizing with the rhythm of traffic laws and regulations, ultimately contributing to a more
seamless and sustainable urban mobility landscape.
Answers to Questions

Calculate the speed of the vehicles:

𝑳 𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝒇𝒕
U1 = 𝒀𝒀−𝑿𝑿 = 𝟕.𝟓𝟖 𝒔𝒆𝒄 − 𝟎 𝒔𝒆𝒄 = 65.96306069 ft/sec or 65.96 ft/sec
𝑳 𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝒇𝒕
U2 = 𝒀𝒀−𝑿𝑿 = 𝟗.𝟏𝟖 𝒔𝒆𝒄 − 𝟑 𝒔𝒆𝒄 = 80.90614887 ft/sec or 80.91 ft/sec
𝑳 𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝒇𝒕
U3 = 𝒀𝒀−𝑿𝑿 = 𝟏𝟐.𝟑𝟔 𝒔𝒆𝒄 − 𝟔 𝒔𝒆𝒄 = 78.6163522 ft/sec or 78.62 ft/sec
𝑳 𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝒇𝒕
U4 = 𝒀𝒀−𝑿𝑿 = 𝟐𝟏.𝟕𝟒 𝒔𝒆𝒄 − 𝟏𝟐 𝒔𝒆𝒄 = 51.33470226 ft/sec or 51.33 ft/sec

QUESTION 1

a. Time Mean Speed (uT)

𝟔𝟓.𝟗𝟔 + 𝟖𝟎.𝟗𝟏 + 𝟕𝟖.𝟔𝟐 + 𝟓𝟏.𝟑𝟑
uT = 𝟒
𝟏
uT = 69.21 ft/sec (𝟏.𝟒𝟔𝟕)
uT = 47.18 mph
b. Space Mean Speed (us)
𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝒇𝒕 (𝟒)
us = (𝟕.𝟓𝟖 + 𝟔.𝟏𝟖 + 𝟔.𝟑𝟔 + 𝟗.𝟕𝟒)𝒔𝒆𝒄
𝟏
us = 66.98 ft/sec (𝟏.𝟒𝟔𝟕)
us = 45.66 mph
c. Flow at section XX

𝟒(𝟑𝟔𝟎𝟎 𝒔𝒆𝒄/𝒉𝒓)
q= 𝟏𝟓
q = 960 veh/h

QUESTION 2

𝒏
a. Density, k= 𝑳
𝟔 𝒗𝒆𝒉
k = 𝟔𝟎𝟎 𝒇𝒕(5280 )
k = 52.8 veh/mi
k = 53 veh /mi
𝟏
b. Flow, q= 𝒕
𝟏
q = 𝟒 𝒔𝒆𝒄/𝒗𝒆𝒉(3600)
q = 900 veh/hr
𝒒
c. Space mean speed, us= 𝒌
𝟗𝟎𝟎 𝒗𝒆𝒉/𝒉𝒓
us =𝟓𝟐.𝟖 𝒗𝒆𝒉/𝒎𝒊
us = 17.04 mph
QUESTION 3

The distance traversed by each vehicle 20 seconds after crossing section x-x:

Vehicle A:
1.47 𝑓𝑡/𝑠𝑒𝑐
Va = 50mi/h x x 20 sec = 1470ft
1𝑚𝑖/ ℎ
At B to E:
Vb = 45(1.47)(20-3) = 1124.55 ft
Vc = 40(1.47)(20-3-4) = 764.4 ft
Vd = 35(1.47)(20-3-4-3) = 514.5 ft
Ve = 30(1.47)(20-3-4-3-5) = 220.5 ft

220.5ft 514.5ft 764.4ft 1124.55ft 1470ft
