ANALYSIS:

1. Identify the differences of the western concept of hero and Filipino concept
Bayani?
-A Filipino national hero is someone who has been honoured for their
contributions to the country's history, or who is strong and has the confidence to
lead and fight together with his comrades in the community.

-The character is a western hero, a type of hero or protagonist in fiction, that is

most commonly associated with the western genre. They partake in the activities
of the Wild West. A Western Concept of hero is a person who has great courage,
strength, and special abilities.
2.Give the criteria in recognizing heroes. Explain their meaning.
CRITERIA FOR RECOGNIZING HEROES
A Hero is a social construct. Since that is the nature of the process,
recognizing heroes is always subjective. To bridge the gap, the National
Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) released some of the criteria
3
for recognizing heroes, through their Project Saysay. The Criteria are listed
below:
1. The extent of a person’s sacrifice for the welfare of the country (Teodoro
A. Agoncillo, 1965);
2. The motive and methods employed in the attainment of the ideal
(Welfare of the country) (Teodoro A. Agoncillo, 1965);
3. The moral character of the person concerned (Teodoro A. Agoncillo,
1965);
4. The influence of the person concerned on his/her age and or the
succeeding age (Teodoro A. Agoncillo, 1965);
5. Those who have a concept of nation and thereafter aspire and struggle
for the nation’s freedom (Onofre D. Corpuz, 1993);
6. Those who define and contribute to a system of life of freedom and order
for a nation (Onofre D. Corpuz, 1993);
7. Those who contribute to the quality of life and destiny of a nation (Onofre
D. Corpuz, 1993);
8. A part of the people’s expression (Alfredo Lagmay 1995); 9. A person
who thinks of the future, especially the future generaions (Alfredo Lagmay
1995) and
10.The choice of hero involves not only the recounting of an episode or
events in history, but of the entire process that made this particular person a hero
(Alfredo Lagmay) 1995).
-this Criteria is those have a concept of nation and thereafter aspire and struggle
for the nation’s freedom.
3. In promoting the heroism of Rizal, give the steps done by the colonial and post-
colonial in the Philippines.

-On the first commemoration of Rizal’s death. It was reported that there were
provinces who solemnly commemorates in front of his portrait and it is
documented that there was a portrait of Rizal hanging on a room where the
Katipunan held their meetings because they believe that Rizal was a honorary
member of the secret society. To the contrary, Americans made Rizal the national
hero of the Philippines depending on the criteria that they used and also, he was
choosen to embody the brand of nationalism propagated by the American colonial
government and this government made another criteria because there is no
declaration that Rizal is the official hero of the country. After that, Rizal became an
important figure in the Philippines and Republic Act 1425 ( Rizal Law) was
implemented for educational purposes.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL: Base on the given criteria for recognizing heroes, write a
reflection paper on “How can a student like you become a Bayani in your own
way?”

-As a student, I don’t have the power or capability to contribute a lot in our
country but I will still do my best to help other people and become a bayani in my
own way, I will help my Parents in doing household chores to lessen their
tiredness, and to help those people who is in need and to help the poor by giving
foods and things to them.
