Borobudur
Borobudur is a Hindu-Buddhist temple built in the 9th century under the Syilendra Dynasty of
Java. It is located near Magelang on the island of Java, Indonesia.
Abandoned in the 11th century and partially excavated by archaelogist in the early 20th century,
Borobudur temple is well known all over the world. Influenced by the Gupta architecture of
India, the temple is constructed on a hill 46 m (150ft) height and consists of eight steps, like
stone terraces, one top of the other.
The first five terraces are square and surrounded by walls adorned with Buddhist sculpture in
bas-relief, the upper three circular, each with a circle of bell-shaped stupas (Buddhist shrines).
The entire edifice is crowned by a large stupa at the centre of the top circle. The way to summit
extends through some 4.8 km of passages and stairways. The design of Borobudur, a temple-
mountain symbolizing the structure of universe, influenced temple built as Angkor, Cambodia.
Borobudur, rededicated as Indonesia national monument in 1983, is a valuable treasure for

The Legend of Merapi Mount

The story happened a long time ago in Central Java. At that time, the island of
Java was not balanced. The western side was higher. How could this happen? Well the
gods in the heaven thought it was because there was a big mountain in western side.
The name of the mountain was Jamurdipa Mountain.
The gods were planning to move the mountain to the center of the island. The head of
the gods, Batara Guru, held a meeting with other gods.

problem," said Batara Guru.
He continued, "There are two empus living in the place where we want to put the
mountain."
Empu is a blacksmith, he is a person who creates objects from wrought iron or steel by
forging the metal. The two empus who lived in the center of the islands were Empu
Rama and Empu Pamadi. They were excellent at making keris, a traditional weapon
which is believed to have magical powers. Not everybody could make great keris, only
the chosen ones. Empu Rama and Empu Pamadi were the chosen ones. They mastered
