I. LEARNING
STANDARDS
A. Content Standard The learners demonstrate understanding of:

1. The development of atomic models that led to the description of the

behavior of electrons within atoms.
2. How atoms combine with other atoms by transferring or by sharing
electrons.
3. Forces that hold metals together

B. Performance The learners shall be able to: \

Standard
No performance standard indicated in the Curriculum Guide.

C. Learning The learners should be able to:

Competency
(with the LC code) Recognize the different types of compounds (ionic or covalent) based on
their properties such as melting point, hardness, polarity, and
electrical and thermal conductivity. (S9MT-IIb-14)

D. Learning Objectives At the end of the period, the learners are expected to:
1. define covalent bonding
2. identify elements that will most likely form covalent bonds
3. illustrate the sharing of electrons of given atoms; and
4. appreciate the forces of attraction between atoms that lead to chemical
bonding.

II. CONTENT
A. Subject Matter/ COVALENT BONDING
Topic:

B. Concepts: * Chemical Bonding refers to the formation of a chemical bond between

two or more atoms, molecules, or ions to give rise to a chemical
compound. These chemical bonds are what keep the atoms together in the
resulting compound.
* A covalent bond consists of the mutual sharing of one or more pairs of
electrons between two atoms. These electrons are simultaneously attracted
by the two atomic nuclei. A covalent bond forms when the difference
between the electronegativities of two atoms is too small for an electron
transfer to occur to form ions.
* Ionic bonds occur between both nonmetals.

ELICIT
B. Reviewing * Let the students answer a short activity.
previous lesson “Chemical Puzzle”
or presenting
the new
lesson?

* Let the students examine the Lewis Dot Structure for Ammonia.
B. Establishing the
purpose of the
lesson

*Ammonia solutions are used to clean, bleach, and deodorize; to etch

aluminum; to saponify (hydolyze) oils and fats; and in chemical
manufacture. The ammonia sold for household use is a dilute water solution
of ammonia in which ammonium hydroxide is the active cleansing agent. Is
the octet rule satisfied for each atom in the ammonia molecule?
ENGAGE
C. Presenting * Let the students watch a video lesson about Covalent bonding and
examples/ after they will answer a series of questions.
instances of the
new lesson

(EXPLORE)
A. Discussing * Guide Questions:
new concepts 1. What is the second type of Chemical Bonding?
and practicing 2. How do covalent compounds formed?
new skills #1 3. What kind of particle is produced after covalent bonding?

B. Discussing * Sample Problem:

new concepts 1. Show the bond formation using the Lewis electron dot diagram for the
and practicing following elements:
new skills #2
A. Cl2

B. CO2

EXPLAIN
F. Developing mastery * Emphasized that most ionic compounds are formed from sharing of
electrons between nonmetals.
* Use Lewis electron dot diagram to show the bond formation between the
following elements:
1. CaCl
2. NO
3. Br2
ELABORATE

G. Finding practical * Ask students to cite/give the important uses of some covalent compounds
application of in day to day life (e.g.) Water, molecules of oxygen and nitrogen, etc
concepts and skills
in daily living

H. Making * Covalent bonds are formed by sharing pair of electrons between two
generalizations and atoms. They are found in a long list of substances such as paper, garbage
abstractions about bags, sugar, bloodstream, DNA, and every tissue in the human body.
