r b) Standard Fenetration Test:
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) have been executed in atl the bore hotes at 5 ft
intervals up to final depth of boring. ln this test, a sptit spoon sampter of 2" out

I diarneter and 1-3/8" inner diameter is made to penetrate 18 inches, into the soil
by drops of a hammer weighting 140 tbs (63.5 kgs) fatting freety for a height of 30

r inches. Numbers of blows of hammer required for penetration of each 6" length
of the sampteq are recorded. The number of bLows for the last 12 'inches
penetration of the total 18" i5 known as the Standard Penetratjon Value (N-

t vatues) as specified by ASTM and the SPT-N vatue is ptotted with particutar depth.
c) Extraction of soil samples:

t Disturbed soil samptes were cottected at 5 ft intervats and at every change of soit
strata by sptit spoon sampter. These soit samptes were studied visuatty and the
soi[ ctassification were done to prepare strata chart of soits up to the exptored

I depth. Before collection of samptes, the hote is wasted and cteaned the driit pipe
with hetp of an adapter and is lowered into the hote. The sampte is then pressed
down into the ground in one rapid continuous top is fitted with soit sampte.

I 2.3 Laboratorv tests:

Att laboratory tests were conducted on soit sarnptes cottected either in the

t disturbed or in the undisturbed state. Att tests were done as per ASIM
procedures, are as fottow:

I a. Natural l{ioisture Content:

The Water content of a soil sampte is the ratio of the weight of the water in the

t sampte to its dry weight. lt is usuatty expressed as a percentage. The soit sampte
is weighted both in natura[ state and in oven dry state and the moisture content
is catculated by dividing the toss of weight of the sampte by its dry weight.

I b. Particle Size Distribution:

The object of grain size anatysis is to determine the size of the soit grains, and

I the percentage by weight of soil partictes of different partictes size, comprising a

soi[ sampte. The process consists of either sieve anatysis or hydrometer anatysis

r or both. The hydrometer anatysis is adopted for sampte passingsieve No. 200. For
hydrometer analysis, 50 gm of the oven dry sampl,e is thoroughty mixed with
required quantity of water in a catibrated gtass cytinder. ln-order to avoid

t ftoccutation, a little dispersing agent. is adding. The density of the suspension is

measured at specified time intervats, by means of a hydrometer or speciat
design. At any particutar time the size of [argest parttcte remounting in

I suspension at the [eve[ of the hydrometer can be computed by means of Stocks

[aw, where as the weight of the partictes finer then size, can be cornputed from

t the density of the suspension at the sampte [eve[. The mixture is waslred through
U'S standard sieve No. 200 and the fraction retained is dried. The friction
retained of each sieve is weighted for catcutation of the percentage of different

r friction. The results are represented by cumutative curves ptJtteO on semi

logarithmic graph paper.

t
c. Atterberg Limits:
Physical properties of clay are greatty inftuenced by water content. A given soil
behaves as a ftuid or a soil or, as ptastic materials, depending on how much water
it contains. The water contents that correspond to the boundaries between the
states of consistency are catted as the Atterberg limits. Liquid timit is the
minimum water content at which a ctay soit just starts behaving [ike a ftuid. lt is
determined with the hetp of a standard liquid timit device. The ptastic limit is
the minimum Water content at which a soil is just ptastic and is determined by
rotting out a soit sampte at a slowty decreasing water content untit, the desired
water content is reached, at which a thread of 1/8 inch diameter just begging to
crumbte. The thread is rotted on gtass ptate with hand.
d. Specific Gravity Test:
The specific Gravity of a sotid defined as
the rate of the unit weight of the sotid
in air to the unit weight of water. To determine the specific gravity of soit
sampte, 25 grams of oven dried soil sampte is thoroughty pulverized and is ptaced
in a catibrated pycnometer. Water is poured inside the pycnometer until. its top is
stightty bettows the catibrated mark. The mixture is then betted thoroughty in
order to etiminate the air baubtes. More water is then added to mixture titt
overnight, the temperature is then recorded and the bottte is weighted. The
specific gravity G, is given by:

G, = (Gt x Wr) +(Ws-W,+Wr)

Where,
Gt = Specific gravity of water at ToC.
W, = The weight of over dry soil (25 gms)
t{, = Weight of ftask + soil + water
u/
lf = Weight of ftask + water
t

e. Direct Shear Test:

Direct Shear test can be Performed for both cohesion less & cohesive soil to
determine shear strength, angte of internal friction, cohesion c, votume change
etc. The test is done in a direct shear machine which consists of a normat toadiig
device, shearing device having diameter 6.35 cm and height 2.54 cm, circutal
box, etc. The rate on shearfng disptacement of sampte approximatety 10 mm per
minute is determined. The resutts of a direct shear test on a cohesion tess &
cohesive soil can be presented in a summary tabte & by stress-strain curve. A
stress' strain curye normalty consists of shear stress; various shear displacement
for both the undisturbed and the remolded tests under a specified norma[ load.
.
The normat load usuatly varies from 1 13 kgl cm' ta 1 kgt cmz Another curve of
normat stress verses shearing stress wi[[ give angte of internat friction and
cohesion for cohesive soit.
r 2.4 PhvsicaI properties:
The overatt physical properties of the sub soil formation of the project area have
T been evaluated on the basis of 05 (Five) boring extending up to depth of 81'-0"

r 6. EVALUATION OF
a) Shallow foundation
BEARING CAPACITY OF FOUNDATION

I For cohesive soit, the criteria for finding Bearing Capacity is based on the
undrained shear strength and there the soil. is assumed as purety cohesive soil or
may be estimated from the corrected SPT vatues. For granutar soil it can be

r catcutated from q & c vatues obtained from direct shear tests or from based on
corrected SPT values. On the basis of above criteria, the Bearing Capacities of

t the foundation have been evatuated according to Terzaghi, (Appendix A4:

(TABLE-1)).
According to Tarzaghi's forrnuta: (For cohesive soit)

I 1. Square footing:
2.
Qu = 1.3c'Nc + yDNq + 0.4yBNy
Circutar footing: Qu = 1.3c'Nc + yDNq + 0.3YBNY

I 3. Strip or Continuous footing: Qu = c'Nc + yDNq + 0.5yBNy

For purety cohesive soit, Tarzaghi assumed, O = 0, c'=c and the bearing capacity

I factor are as fottows: (for generat shear faiture), Nc = 5.7, Nq = 1, NY = 0

Tarzaghi (1943) proposed a bearing capacity formuta:
Qutt = C Nc Sc + y Df Nq * 0.5 V B Ny SV
T Where Sc & Sy are shape factor. Tarzaghi assumed, c=0 kg/cm2' Atso these are as

I fottowing:
te: 3 (Coefficient
able: (Coeff for the tootin
tor f
Circular Strip

I
For Square
Sc 1.3 1.3 1.0
Sy 0.8 0.6 1.0

r According to Meyerhof (1951), the ultimate bearing capacity of

(Also for footing on slopes)
strip footing:

I Qu = c'Nc + yDlNq + O.5yBNy

Vatues of Nc, Nq & Ny are depend on O.

edition.
2) Foundation analysis and Design by Joseph E. Bowtes, 5th

I b) Deep foundation:

t Whenever necessary Deep Foundation, preferabty Pite may be used. To

evatuate skin friction and end bearing capacities following formutae may be

I used for driven pile-

According to Meryerhof for sandy soil (for bored pile)

r fsu = q. I 200 = 4*N" /2A0 Bf

qPU = Qc = 4*N" tsf

r
I 8

I
t
r However, when soiI is not purety sand rather presence of some sitt materiats are
found, above retations may be modified as per observation of Schmertmann

I
(1970): for Cast-in-Situ pite
fsu = 3*N" lZ00 tsf
qpu = Z*N,, tsf

r According to M. J. Tomlinson for cohesive soit (for bored pile)

fsu = 3*N"/100 tsf

I QpU = 3*N,,/6 tsf

Ultimate bearing capacity = Skin friction capacity (fs) + End bearing capacity (qp)

I Attowabte bearing capacity = ultimate bearing capacity I F.s (F.s = 3).

gpa = Attowabte vatue of the pite end bearing capacity.
SPT (N) vatues are corrected within catcutation.
ln the case of plastic soit, the vatues of the cohesion have been obtained from

I 9. CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION:

I CONCLUTION:
The overail investigation results of the site defines that Pile Foundation is

I
suitable for the best economic and structurally safe of the project.

RECOMMENDATION:
On the basis aforesaid condition, the following recommendations are
T suggested for 08(Eight) Storied Yarn Factory Building On Chandra Palli
Biddyut, Mollapara, Kaliakoir, Gazipur, Bangladesh.

I The Bearing Capacity of single pile is given in the Table - 5 at the different
depth of 45.72cm (18") & 50.8cm (20") & 60.g6cm (24"1 diameter cast -

I in situ Pile However may accept the embedment length up to

a) lTsf = 2ksf = 1.09 Kg/cmz, lTon = 1000kg = 2000 Lbs, E.G.L. . -
r Existing Ground Level.
b) The theories on the ultimate bearing capacity presented in this report are
based on idealized conditions of soil profiles. This is, in most field

r conditions, not true. Soil profiles are not always homogenous and
isotropic.
c) Pile load test should be performed if pile load test is not pedormed then
I the value of pile should be Considered half
d) Hence, experience and judgment are always necessary in adopting

I proper soil parameters to use the calculation of ultimate bearing capacity.

However, the design Engineer may select any other alternative type, depth

I as well as the bearing capacity of the foundation in the ti$trt of information

provided in this report.
