Chinese learning tips

8 Steps to Learn Chinese Like a Pro
WATCH FULL VIDEO TUTORIAL BY LINGLING
1. Learn in Context
Chinese is a contextual language where many words have different meanings and usage
depending on the context. So never focus on the word on its own, refer to my book Learn
Chinese Vocabulary for Beginners (500 Words in Context) for a complete guide and word
list with examples in context for NEW HSK level 1.
2. Don't translate, try to think in Chinese
Due to grammer and structual differences to other languages like English, when learning
Chinese, it is not useful to translate, instead, try to imitate, repeat and think in the
Chinese (target language) way.

3. Build up your vocabulary and practice at every opportunity

Build your own vocabulary in a dedicated notebook (either print or digital), learn and
group them according to categories. And practice them as much as you can!

4. Read aloud, with passion and energy.

This is the most important step to practice your spoken Chinese, especially if you don't
have many native speakers to practise with. So find authentic Chinese Conversations,
stories and articles to read and practise. Don't waste time memorizing grammar, the trick
is by speaking and reading out constantly, through which the knowledge itself becomes
your second nature that you just master it automatically (just like muscle memory). Refer
to my books: Chinese Conversations for Beginners and Chinese Stories for Language
Learners (Elementary) for such materials and full practice guide.
5. Listen as much as you
The key to improve listening is by brian soaking - listening to Chinese as much as possible.
Make use of all the FREE audio files that come with my books and all the listening videos
on my YouTube channel LingLing Mandarin. Listen and Pratice until you can understand the
audio without the text.
6. Immerse in Chinese TV, films and music
It's very fun and useful to immerse in films and music, it helps with listening and pernounciation.

7. Be bold and have confidence

Don't be shy or self-conscious when speaking Chinese, and never let mistakes put you off.
Remember that everyone makes mistakes - even advanced learners and native speakers!
No one is perfect and we all grow from our own mistakes, so be confident!
8. Set goals and stay committed
Have a committed learning attitude and set goals from small to big will lead you to great
achivements in your Chinese learning journey. So stay committed and never give up!
Remember this Chinese idiom:
有志者 事竟成
Nothing is Impossible with a Willing Heart
