CHAPTER THREE: LESSONS LEARNT, SKILLS ACQUIRED AND EXPERIENCE
SKILLS ACQUIRED DURING MY TIME OF INTERNSHIP
3.0 Networking.
During my industrial training period at KABALE DISTRICT LOCAL GOVERNMENT, I gained a lot of
experience on various field of computer Science especially networking due to the fact that we installed LAN at
the company and also I repaired Ethernet cables which we found faulty

3.1 Computer repair and maintenance.

Computer maintenance and repair, I learned how to repair, replace the damage computers components for
example RAM, Hard disk, Keyboard, Monitor, CD Rom drives, processors, power supply etc., maintenance of
the computer by blowing dust out of the computer using the blower and many other safety measures for the
computers.

3.2 Troubleshooting computers.

I gained experience on fault finding in individual major computer components and how to troubleshoot the
computer system as a whole especially in scenarios where the computer does not display anything on the
monitor.

3.3 Website development.

I was able to develop a good website using html, visual studio code languages using notepad and brackets as
my text editor.

2.0 TROUBLESHOOTING, REPAIR AND MAINTENNANCE OF THE COMPUTER

Below are some of the steps we followed during fault finding and troubleshooting some of the computer
systems.
Step 1
We checked the color of the light that the monitor produces when the computer is powered on, this determines
whether the computer is receiving signal from the computer. The monitor may show blue light when the
monitor is receiving signal from the computer and yellow light when it’s not.
Step 2
Removed the VGA cable from the monitor, and then power on, if the monitor is in good condition then it will
display “NO SIGNAL”, this confirm that the problem is with the VGA cable.[1]
Step 3
Replace the VGA cable with the working one to confirm that there is problem with the VGA cable.

2.1 WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT.

This was through Creation of web layout design, writing, code, and usability testing, maintaining company
websites and managing site content with the help of my supervisor. I was able to design a website with my
fellow students whom I was doing internship with.

2.2 NETWORKING
Networking is the process of connecting two or more computers so that they can communicate and share
information and share resources together.
Types of networks.
MAN: Metropolitan Area Network: This is a computer network that covers the continent by connecting
different states.

8
WAN: Wide Area Network: A WAN is a data communications network that covers a relatively broad
geographic area e.g. one city to another, one country to another.
LAN: Local Area Network: It can be under one building and its wiring should not exceed 100M wire length.
PAN: this signifies Personal Area Network , smaller than a LAN for example a computer and a phone.
This basically involved cable termination, IP configuration and drawing a ground Network plan for my area of
internet.
3.3 Devices used in Networking.

Router: this is a key device that is used on wireless network connection to enable the computer to access the
internet.
Switch: This is a device used to connect more than one computer on a wired network to communicate to one
another.
Network cables: These come in different flavors; cat5, cat6, coaxial and fiber optic cables respectively.
RJ45: Wires are fixed in following a given color code then crimped using a clipping tool.
The clipping tool: It is used for both cutting the cables and then crimping them in the RJ45

Network card: This enables computers to link to the network and internet, without it, communication on a
network may not be possible.
Tower clips: Is a tool used to hold the cables that run on the walls and they come in different sizes
Repeater: Is a network device used to boost the signals on the network when the cables are running long
distances
Hub: Is a network component used to Connect different computers on the network, nowadays they are rarely
used, because have been replaced by switches since they serve the same purpose
Trucking: Is a tool used to protect cables against physical damage
Cable tester: Is used for checking cables if they are working properly after they have been terminated

Figure 3. Shows some of equipment used in networking.

Terminating Ethernet Cables

Types of cables
Straight through cable and Crossover cable; For the straight through cable, both side are equal, they take
standard A or standard B on both sides while for the crossover, one side takes standard A on one side and B on
the 2nd side. The rollover is arranged in such a way that if side A is from 1 to 8, then B will be from 8 to 1. It is
used to link switch to switch or hub to hub or router to router.

9
Termination of the network cables.
A network cable is a physical medium through which different devices are connected to the network. In this
case the two cables were terminated, that is to say:
i. A straight through cable. This is the type of network cable that connects Computer to hub, switch, or
router. It has the following color coding on both ends as in the table;

Table 3: Showing straight through cable color coding.

Side A Side B

Light orange light orange

Orange Orange

Blue Blue

Light brown Light brown

Get the wires lined up correctly and then straight. Then I clipped off the top millimeter so that they are all the
same length and stick out about half an inch from the insulated part.

Figure 4: Inserting a wire in RJ-45

I inserted the RJ-45 jack on the wires with the clip tool facing me.
After inserting RJ-45 jack on the wires, I inserted the jack into the clipper and press down tightly on the tool to
seal the wires in the RJ-45.
ii. A crossover cable.
This type of cable can be used to directly connect two computers to each other without the use of a hub
or a switch. The ends on a crossover cable are different from each other and are as shown in the table
below:

The following are the steps I took in making a network cable:

Step1. I took the roll of UTP cable and cut the cable to length using the clipping tool. The length depends on
your choice but I would advise to be 2 inches or three
• Here I splice the end by using the clipping tool to expose the unshielded twisted pairs.
• I took each twisted pair and made four wire strands, each going out from the center of the wire.
• Now here I took the individual twisted wire pairs and untwist them down to individual wires in the following
order: Striped Orange, Orange, Striped Green, Blue, Striped Blue, Green, Striped Brown, and Brown
• Next, I grasped the wires with my thumb and index finger of your non-dominant hand. Took each wire and
snug them securely side by side.
• Using the cutting blade of the crimp tool, I cut the ends off of the wires to make each wire is of the same
height as the other.
• Still grasping the wires, I insert the RJ-45 jack on the wires with the clip facing away from you.
After inserting RJ-45 jack on the wires, I inserted the jack into the crimper and press down tightly on the tool
to seal the wires in place. Once I made the first head, I repeated steps two through eight. When untwisting the
wires down to sing strands, you can use the following
Order: Striped Green, Green, Striped Orange, Blue, Striped Blue, Orange, Striped Brown, and Brown.
After making the second head, I plunged in the cable to test connectivity using the cable tester, and enjoyed
viewing the light go through both sides simultaneously.

EXPERIENCE GAINED WHILE AT KABALE DISTRICT LOCAL GOVENMENT

3.4 Experiences Gained

I got practical experience in solving various computer related problems ranging from hardware to software and
also got to know more about computer hardware.
Communication skills, I gained skills on how to communicate with employers and workmates with different
personalities
Leadership skills, I learnt how to manage people with different personalities
Networking skills, I gained a lot of experience in networking i.e. creating a network doing various
configuration such as configuring a router and a switch, Ethernet cable termination etc...

11
CHAPTER FOUR: CHALLENGES FACED AND THEIR SOLUTIONS
4.0 CHALLENGES FACED

 During computer repair and maintenance most of the computer components were technical and required
more knowledge beyond our course for example the power supply which needed more knowledge of
electrical engineering.
 During the computer maintenance that is to remove dust out of the computers, I had no mask to protect
us from inhaling dust.
 We had problem with the internet connection during programming since I designed the software using
text editor that was new to us i.e. Brackets so we relied on internet to get to know how to use it.
 Power issues – during my intern power was not stable it was on and so it interrupted my work since I
had computer on required work plan most

4.1.1 SOLUTIONS TO THE ABOVE CHALLENGES

 The organization should fuel the standby generator every time.
 The government should provide enough funds to care for Kabale District local government.
 The College should provide enough learning materials to their students during internship.
 Kabale District Local government should provide lunch allowances to cater for their internees to solve
the hunger problem during lunch hours.

12
CHAPTER FIVE: CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION
5.0 Recommendations
I recommend that internship training under the department of information technology and computer science
should be conducted every year as new technology is emerging each and every day so that students can keep
updated to the new technologies used in businesses.
I also recommend that the department of information and communication technology should always
communicate to the students of internship to tell them their supervisor when it is still early such that they keep
in tough communicating to each other.
I also recommend our College to improve and update the curriculum to suit the studies to the current job
market, that is to say more practical work should be emphasized than theory.
The College should give industrial training allowance to students so that they can get the necessities required
during their training for example transport costs.

5.1 Conclusion
During the period for industrial training at KABALE DISTRICT LOCAL GOVERNMENT, we started by
orientation on the first day followed by a number of projects that I did and are listed below in a chronological
order;
We started by computer component identification, assembling and disassembling, computer troubleshooting,
computer software installation, computer repair and maintenance, networking, and lastly software development
i.e. asset tracking system.
I gained a lot of experience during my industrial training which includes, Computer programming with HTML,
PHP, and MYSQL for databases Languages
