BunkerFunk

BunkerFunk is a Rotterdam based group


consisting of Wietse Voermans on tenor
saxophone, Andrew Moreno on guitar, Richie
Struck on the drums and Johannes Fend on the
bass.

The band brings a powerfull and raw energy on


the moment blending elements of free
improvisation and the music our pears listen to
such as Rock, Funk, Western-Pop through out the
compositions creating an interesting musical
counterpoint for the audience.

The band had played around the Netherlands in


places like Brebl, Jazzcafé Dizzy in the North Sea
Round Town in 2022 and among others.

On the summer of 2022 we just recorded our


first album called "Its a vibe" in Wedgeview
Studios (NL) and currently planning a tour
around the Netherlands, Austria and Germany-

Wietse Voermans’s work, as a saxophonist, composer and improviser, encompasses a variety of settings. Most of Wietse’s
activities in recent years have been exploring different approaches of composing, playing and fulfilling multidisciplinary
projects. He enjoys discovering new possibilities and developing a different understanding of his saxophone. On that account
he never shies to take up a challenge and therefor is known for a unique sound and style. He writes compositions for the
projects Spoken (where he has a leading role) and Vehikel. Furthermore he has composed for film, art, theatre and other
ensembles.

Wietse Voermans graduated at Codarts (the jazz academy of Rotterdam) in 2015 after finishing his final year of the master in
saxophone and composition at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen .In 2016 he made it to the finals of the
Erasmus Jazz Prize with Quartzite 4tet where he personally won the prize for ‘best soloist’. In 2017 he won the Keep an Eye
the Records competition with his ensemble Spoken. In 2018 he got selected for the Pack Project of Jazz International (a carte
blanche for Festival Jazz International). And in 2022 he was one of the ten composers who got selected for De Week van de
Jazz Compositieopdracht (The Week of the Jazz Composition assignment).

In recent years Wietse has toured all over Europe with various collaborations and he has established a leading or sideman
role within several interesting projects varying from multidisciplinary free-impro to contemporary composed music
projects. These are all mainly leaning towards the left-of-center jazz, contemporary, improv genre within the jazz scene.
Andrew Moreno (1997) He is a Venezuelan guitarist and composer.
From a very early age he decided to venture into music by his own,
delving into the jazz scene in Caracas, which led him to play with
different groups in the Venezuelan capital and orchestras such as the
Simón Bolívar Big Band Jazz from the Simón Bolivar Conservatorium
as a solid member playing all over the country.

At the age of 18 he decides to go to Europe which leads him to


perform numerous concerts with a diverse range of musical genres,
from jazz, rock, funk, and free improvisation. After some time
making a successful life as a side-man in Europe, he decided to
pursue academic studies and He was admitted to do his bachelor's
degree at the Rotterdam Conservatory (Codarts) since 2020 taking
classes regularly with musicians like Nelson Veras, Ronald Schmitz
and Mark Schilders.

Andrew has played around Venezuela, Spain, Belgium and the


Netherlands with artists such as Miles Okazaki, Tineke Postma,
Jasper Blom, Benjamin Herman, Joost Patocka, Ernst Glerum, Filipo
Deorsola, Marco Luparia, Andrés Briceño, Eric Seva, Jimmy
Weinstein, Julian Vaughn, Jesse Schilderink, playing in venues such
as Sala Simón Bolívar, De Doelen, Bimhuis, Theather De Vest, Tivoli
Vredenburg, Brebl, Batavierhuis, and several festivals such as Injazz
(2022), Whats Next (2021), Breda Jazz Festival (2021) Gratchen Jazz
Festival (2022) and many others.

Andrew Moreno has also been nominated as a finalist twice in the


Erasmus Jazz Prize Competition (2021) in Rotterdam with his group
and with FLIM on the same year as a side man. Currently working
with his group and releasing his first album next year featuring the
saxophonist Tineke Postma, and as well playing with several bands
from the Netherlands improvised music scene.
Johannes Fend is a Bass player that speaks with a
unique voice on the instrument. Having studied Jazz
and classical music he is a versatile musician and
currently very active in the European music scene.

Johannes moved to the Netherlands from Austria to


study Jazz and classical Double Bass at the Prins
Claus conservatory and later do his masters degree
at the Rotterdam Conservatory.

During this time he was fortunate to get to study


and play with musicians out of the New York Jazz
scene such as David Berkman, Paul Berner, Matt
Wilson, Todd Coolman, Alex Sipiagin and many
more. And he took classical Bass lessons and
participated in master classes with Sorin Orcinschi,
Francisco Obieta, Catalin Rotaru, Dorin Marc,
Matthew Midgley and Wolfgang Güttler.

For his solo Project, he won the 2nd prize at the “Il
Sole In Cantina Award”. At the “Leiden Jazz Award”
he won the first prize with “Marco Apicella Trio”
and at “Erasmus Jazz Price” he was awarded the
prize for the best soloist. He was invited to play at
the international Choro Festival in New York City
and performed with the Bossa Legend Wanda Sa.
With "Half Easy Trio" he won the "Keep an eye on
Jazz - The Records" competition held at the Bimhuis
in Amsterdam. Also he had the pleasure to perform
with the great Franz von Chossy Trio during a Tour
in Germany and he recently toured with Aynur
Dogan in Europe and Turkey.
