Point 1 – factors causing mental illness

There are many different causes of mental health problems. In many people, it is likely that
there is a complicated combination of factors, although different people may be more affected
by certain things than others. Having a good mental health is essential to our overall
wellbeing and various factors can influence it. Recognising the factors is crucial to sustaining
good mental health and treating potential problems. While lifestyle factors such as work, diet,
drugs and lack of sleep can affect mental health, there are usually other factors that lead to a
mental health problem. Often our physical and social environment can affect our emotions,
behaviour and general wellbeing.
