ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

On completion of my investigatory project, I feel extremely delighted,

but it wasn't a single effort. First, I would like to thank my parents for
helping me and encouraging me to continue this project and helping
me financially as well. Then I would like to thank my mentor and
chemistry teacher Dr. Kiran Varsha for teaching me the basics of this
investigation

INTRODUCTION

Scientific name: Psidium guajava

Family: myrtaceae
Guava, known as poor man’s apple of tropics, is a common shade tree
or shrub in door-yard garden in the tropic. The tree itself is a
pharmaceutical shop. Its leaves, flowers, fruit and bark are used as
herbal medicines, biological activities, commercial activities, etc. Guava
has widely spread throughout the tropics. It is easy to cultivate, bear’s
fruit relatively quicky. The fruit contains numerous seeds which can
produce a mature fruit bearing plant within four years. Guava leaves
and barks have a long history of medicinal uses and are still employed
today.

Guava fruit is consumed fresh or used in the making of jams, jellies,

pastes, or hardened jam and juice. The guava flower is used for
wounds, ulcers, skin sores and for sun strain, conjunctivitis or eye
injuries.

Guava leaves contain high levels of vitamin C and iron.

Guava leaves lowers cholesterol, manages diabetes, promotes weight
loss, fights cancer, heals cold and cough, reduces acne, prevents hair
loss, beats toothache, improves quality of sleep, boosts immunity, fight
allergies, smoothers gastrointestinal issues, promote heart health,
improves blood circulation in brain, stimulates cognitive function.
Guava leaves are also best for curing diseases like cholera, dermatitis,
dengue, bronchitis, cold, gum diseases, malaria, typhoid, thyroid
problems, etc.
MATERIALS REQUIRED

1. Guava leaves

2. Beaker

3. Container

4. Caustic soda (NaOH)

5. Oil
THEORY

Making guava leaf extract is done by the reaction mechanism,

saponification. Saponification is a chemical reaction between ester and
an alkali, producing a carboxylate ion and an alcohol. The coconut oil
contains ester and the NaOH is an alkali. These react to form a
carboxylate salt compound
PREPARATION
1. Prepare 800g of guava leaves.

2. Put it in a small basin for washing to remove the dust and some
small insects found in the leaves.

3. After washing, prepare the pot and add water and guava
leaves, and boil them for 15 minutes

4. Get the extract and put it in a beaker

Soap making

1. Prepare a solution of NaOH (150ml) and oil.

2. Add this solution to the guava extract and stir well for 2-3
minutes.

3. Leave the mixture undisturbed for a day.

ADVANTAGES

 Prevents type II diabetes.

 Reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke.
 Prevents cancer, cholera, inflammation.
 Protects liver and fights dermatitis.
 Fights allergies, reduces pain and treats stomach ulcers.
 Keeps oral health, treats cough.
 Prevents hair loss.
 Relieves itchy skin.
 Keeps skin young.
 Cures acne.
 Increases male fertility.
 Treat dengue fever.
 Reduces the symptoms of bronchitis.

DISADVANTAGES

 It is prone to bacterial contamination.

 Make us crave for sugar.
 At some places guava is not available.
 It can also cause diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome.
PRECAUTIONS

1. Do not inhale the fumes because the rising steam carry with it
trace amounts of unreacted NaOH, which is poisonous

2. Do not touch NaOH directly

3. Do not surprise at tremendous heat produce

CONCLUSION

Nowadays people are focusing on herbal products, especially those

which are common in the environment. One of them is guava plant.
Based on research, this plant is good for healing and treating wounds
and other skin infections.
