“I shall probably find him waiting for me when I go home. Poor


old wretch! I wish I could do something for him. I think it is
dreadful that any one should be so miserable.”

1. Identify the speaker and the listener in the above reference.


Ans. The speaker in the above reference is Hughie and the listener is Alan.
2. Describe the model of Alan’s painting.
Ans. Alan’s model for his painting was an old beggar. He had a wrinkled face and a
sordid expression. Over his shoulders was flung a coarse brown cloak, all tears and
tatters. He wore thick boots which were patched, and with one hand he leant on a rough
stick, while with the other hand he held out his battered hat for alms.
3. How did he help him, initially? Elaborate the speaker’s generous suggestions to be taken on
meeting the ‘old wretched man’.
Ans. Hughie initially helped the beggar by giving him a gold coin, a sovereign. He told
Alan that he had a pile of old clothes at home, which he was ready to offer the old
wretched man.
4. How does the story ‘The Model Millionaire’ reflect the values and ideas of the age of the
Victorian era? Do you think these values are still relevant today?
Ans. Personal Response.
In "The Model Millionaire," the protagonist, Hughie Erskine, is portrayed as a kind-
hearted and compassionate individual who values friendship and loyalty. This reflects
the Victorian ideal of a morally upright individual. The story also highlights the
importance of charity and helping those in need.

5. Analyse the character of Hughie, portrayed through his thoughts and actions.
Ans. Hughie is charming, generous, and kind. He is described as charming by the
narrator. The narrator also mentions that he makes friends easily, and women liked him.
He is generous because he gives money to a "beggar" even though he did not have much
money himself. Finally, he is kind because he stands up for the poor and advocates for
fair payment between the painter and the subject of the painting.

B] Reference to the context:
The Colonel was very fond of Hughie, but would not hear of
any formal engagement.

1. Analyse why being in love made matters worse for Hughie.


Ans. Hughie was an unsuccessful young man with no profession and thus no money.
Being in love made matters worse for Hughie. He was in love with Laura Merton, the
daughter of a retired Colonel. But had to arrange ten thousand pounds to get married
to her.
2. What was the Colonel’s condition to allow Hughie to marry his daughter?
Ans. The Colonel was very fond of Hughie but had put forward a condition that Hughie
should have ten thousand pounds with him before he could get married to Laura.
3. Who was Alan Trevor?
Ans. Alan Trevor was Hughie’s close friend. He was a strange rough fellow, with a
freckled face and a red ragged beard. He was an excellent artist. All his artwork was
eagerly sought after.
4. Write how the story would end if Baron Hausberg offered a job to Hughie with a
handsome salary.

5. Hughie was unable to settle down in a profession because he was unwilling to work.
Justify the given statement.
Ans. It was not that Hughie was unwilling to work. In fact, he tried his hand at many
professions, but always failed. In fact, he did not know that art of making money. That
was why he was nowhere successful.
6. Was Hughie able to fulfil the condition laid down by the Colonel? Justify your answer.
Ans. Hughie was a generous man. He did not even think twice before parting with his
sovereign to help a beggar. The Baron was touched by Hughie’s generosity and when he
learnt about his struggles, he gifted Hughie ten thousand pounds as he wanted to help
him get married to Laura. Thus Hughie was able to fulfil the condition laid down by the
Colonel, finally.
