Lake hammer

Large swampy lake in southeastern Iraq, south of the

junction of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Fed by
distributaries of the Euphrates, the lake (70 miles [110
km] long; 750 square miles [1,950 square km] in area)
drains via a short channel into the Shaṭṭ al-ʿArab near
Basra. It was once only a reed-filled marshland but was
later utilized as a natural irrigation reservoir for the
fertile soils of the delta region, where dates, rice, and
cotton were grown. The lake and surrounding
marshlands are the traditional home of the Maʿdan, a
tribe of seminomadic marsh dwellers who are
sometimes referred to as Marsh Arabs. Their distinctive
culture is based on the herding of water buffalo, the
hunting of wildfowl and pigs from reed canoes, and the
building of elaborate houses of woven reeds (Arabic:

REED ARCHITECTURE

The most immediate ways of interacting with

nature of course is to design for both climate
and topography, using local resources to make
ourselves comfortable by means of the building
itself, with a minimum involvement of
mechanical devices. The earliest known example
of such construction still in use is the Sumerian,
reed-built mudhif which is also one of the
oldest known monumental building types.
These mudhifs were built by the culture which
not only developed the world’s first cities, with
their great mud-brick ziggurats and temples; it
also invented writing, for the keeping of temple
records. And of course, for sustenance, the cities
had to be surrounded by agricultural villages Refinished Existing

Structure
The completed framework is covered
with intricately woven split-reed mats to
form the integrated walls and roof. The
upper parts of the end walls are
enclosed with a curtain of the same
material, and four or five reed “columns”
are erected to support a framework to
which a decorative lattice is fixed,
always to beautiful effect. Depending on
the length of the reeds used for the
arches, the house can be 12 feet (3.7
meters) wide; the length is
indeterminate, and buildings up to 100
feet (30 meters) have been recorded.
Furnishings are sparse: the reed floors
