Introduction
A few cases of cracked piston screws (113 008) have been found on highly loaded
engines, see Figure 1.
An improved piston screw has been introduced to eliminate the risk for cracking.

Identification
The improved piston screw can be identified by the Torx E20 type screw head, see
Figure 2.
Recommendation
It is recommended to replace the piston screws (113 008) at every piston overhaul as
specified in engine manual and Instructions 3211Q066, 3211Q067 and 3411Q068.
When replacing the piston screws make sure to use the improved type.
CAUTION:
Piston screw fractures can cause major engine damage.
TECHNICAL BULLETIN
Instructions
To assemble the piston, follow the instructions in the engine instruction manual. The
tightening instructions and torques have not changed.
NOTE:
Do not bend the tool and the screws when tightening. A Torx E20 socket is needed for
the tightening.

engine serial number and part number.
If unused piston screws of the old type in the customer stock are returned to Wärtsilä
before 30 September 2015, improved piston screws will be available free of cost (DDP
Incoterms). Kindly contact your closest Wärtsilä Services Network for instructions.
