Setting in the novel

It is set in northern Uganda in a war torn area where the characters are furious, bitter and ready to act
with remorse in the face of mischief against them or provocation. When father Santos(Dila) gets involved
with Flo, he puts his life on the line

Major themes

The major themes in the novel are rebellion, religion and despair

The themes of rebellion, religion and despair are evidenced in the novel “Fate of the banished” where
Apire, a failed student turned rebel. He returns from his bush exploits to find his wife but unfortunately
he finds her in the bed of Fr. Rev. Dila. He executes both of them and hands them over the police

More to that, there is religious hypocrisy. This is where we see church leaders being involved in evil acts
such as adultery. This is seen through the character of Flo, a church choir member who seduces Fr. Dila
that she loves him. Fr. Dila accepts to sleep with Flo yet it is prohibited for catholic fathers to get involved
in sexual acts.

Poor governance. This is evidenced through the story of Apire where he tells us about the death of his
father that he was murdered by the state of security agents “…..pumped him full with bullets” which
clearly shows how this government is. Instead of the security agents to keep law and orders in the
country, the just kill people.

There are other themes in the novel “Fate of the banished” which include suffering, adultery, family
violence among others

Plot

The story centers on Fr. Santos Dila- the embodiment of Christian virtue, having trained in Gregorian
university and who is now the Parish priest. He falls in love with Flo the wife of the rebel. It is set in a war
torn area, the characters are furious, bitter and ready to act with little remorse in the face of mischief
against them. When Fr. Dila gets involved with Flo, he puts his life on the line. The story involves an
investigation of whether the cleric was fully prepared by his priestly training to resist any attemption
from thw beautiful sister. Apire, Flo’s husband, returns from the bush to find his wife with Fr. Dila. He
executes both of them and hands himself over the police. The book follows Apire and FR. Santos.
However, there are other characters like Erabu, Betty, Pulu and Maria.

Character and characterization

The major characters are; Fr. Dila, Flo, Apire, Erabu, Betty, Maria and many others. Theses characters are
furious, bitter and are ready to act with remorse. This is seen through the character of Apire and Erabu
who are rebels fighting for revenge that is, Apire revenges for the death of his father who is killed by the
state security agents while Erabu is revenging for the destruction of his home through the raids of his
cattle.

More to this some characters are hardworking and responsible. This is seen through the character of
Betty, the elder sister of Apire after their father’s death, she leaves a boarding school in order to take
care of the mother and her siblings. She starts up small businesses with the help of the mother and she
earns some little money to pay for the siblings’ school fees.

Furthermore, there are some characters who are traitors. This is evidenced through Flo and Fr. Dila
where Flo is a married woman but she falls in love with father which helps to bring a theme of adultery
and Fr. Dila who sleeps with Flo yet he is a catholic trained priest yet they are not supposed to involve in
sexual acts which helps to bring a theme of religious hypocrisy.

Point of view

Julius Ocwinyo explores the ravages of the war through unpacking the circumstances of a few directly
involving principles.
