What is Information Source?

• Is a source of information for somebody, i.e. anything that might inform a person about something
or provide knowledge to somebody.
• Information sources may be observation, people, speeches, documents, picture and many more

Different Sources of Information

1. Indigenous Knowledge - …owned, controlled and managed by indigenous peoples in order


for them to develop and produce culturally appropriate information in the languages
understood by the community by utilizing indigenous materials and resources, reflecting
community needs and interests, visions and aspirations, and independent from vested
interest groups. (Indigenous Media, Freedom of Expression and Right to Information: A S E
A N S c e n a r i o, 2014)

2. Library - a place in which literary, musical, artistic or reference materials (such as books,
manuscripts, recordings or films) are kept or use but not for sale.

3. Internet - A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication


facilities consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

4. Mass Media - Technology that is intended to reach a mass audience. It is the primary means
of communication used to reach the vast majority of the general public.

The common platforms for mass media are:

1. What is indigenous and indigenous people?

Indigenous refers to native; local; originating or produced naturally in a particular region.


Knowledge that is unique to a given culture or society refers to Indigenous knowledge (IK). IK contrasts
with the international knowledge system generated by universities, research institutions and private
firms. (Warren 1991).
Indigenous communication refers to transmission of information through local channels or forms. It is
a means by which culture is preserved, handed down, and adapted.

Indigenous media and information refer to the original information created by a local group of people.
This also refers to content about indigenous peoples that may be distributed through dominant forms of
media or through forms of communication unique to their people group

channels. IK has its own characteristics making it easy to distinguish among other sources such as: oral tradition
of communication, store information in memories, information exchange is face-to-face, and information are contain
within the border of the community
