NARRATIVE REPORT

I. TYPE OF CROP MANAGED: Lettuce (Lactuca sativa)

II. INTRODUCTION

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is one the most commonly grown hydroponic vegetables.

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil. Plants may be grown in a nutrient

solution only (liquid culture) or they may be supported by an inert medium (aggregate

medium). In both systems, all of the plants’ nutritional needs are supplied through the

irrigation water.

Hydroponics is a highly exacting and demanding system that requires a greater

amount of production knowledge, experience, technical skills, and financial investment than

many other greenhouse systems. A grower must be committed to meeting the daily

demands of production to be successful.

While there are a number of different hydroponic system that have been

commercially successful lettuce production, this profile will focus on the nutrient film

technique and the floating raft method. Prospective growers should obtain as much

information as they can about hydroponic production before entering into this type of

enterprise.

III. JOB ACCOMPLISMENT

A. Orientation

The whole class were required to bring 4 seedlings of lettuce per student, a

contribution for the nutrient solution, 14 plastic bottles each student, Styrofoam box,

net for putting a greenhouse, and bamboos poles submitted by the students.

B. Area Preparation
Near the new building of Agriculture, we had given a small area where we can

make a greenhouse for our lettuce production .We started to clean the area by

clearing

the weeds, cutting tall grasses and putting up the bamboo poles and the net. Outside

of the greenhouse were cleaned and planted it with Marigold.

C. Growing of Seeds

Initially, we sow the seeds of lettuce in a seed box but it was unsuccessful,

the seeds did not germinate well and eventually died. What we did was each student

provided four seedling, whether it was brought or personally sown.

D. Care and Maintenance

Since it was grown in under greenhouse, it keeps the plants in a bright room

but out of direct sunlight. Provides adequate light, maintaining air temperature and

adjusting the nutrient levels was controlled to ensure the best result. Maintaining the

cleanliness of the area by weeding it regularly to provide a desirable environment for

the crop.

IV. OBSERVATIONS

The lettuce seeds that was sown did not germinate well maybe because we are

lacking of knowledge and experience before we start in planting of the crop. In constructing

the greenhouse, it is important that all materials are well prepared and available before

starting to avoid any inconvenience later on during construction.

Most of the time, the requirements that student must provide are always late causing

a low productivity and development of the greenhouse and the crop.
