Meaning of Communication
Communication skills are those skills which are needed to speak and write properly.
Meaning of communication
The word ‘Communication’ comes from the Latin word commūnicāre, meaning ‘to share’.
Communication is the process of exchanging or passing of information, ideas or thoughts from
one person to the other in a meaningful way.
Speaking and writing to someone are examples of giving information. Reading and listening to
someone are examples of receiving information.
1. Physical/Environmental barrier: Anything that prevent you from receiving or understanding the
messages like noise, climate, medium, visual perception etc
2. Language barriers: Difficulty in speaking with people who speak a different language.
3. Cultural barrier: When different cultures prevent you from communicating effectively. For
example people with different beliefs, different cultural meanings etc
4. Gender barrier: When men and women cannot communicate because of difference in ideas,
attitudes and values.
5. Emotional barrier: Mental walls that prevent people from openly communicating their thoughts
and feelings to others.
Effective communication
Effective communication can happen if we follow the basic principles of professional
communication skills. These can be abbreviated as 7 Cs, i.e., Clear, Concise, Concrete,Correct,
Coherent, Complete and Courteous.
Types of communication
Communication can take place in many ways:

Verbal Communication
Verbal communication is the sharing of information by using words. It is what most people use
as a method of communication.
Verbal communication can be divided into two categories.
Disadvantages
Gestures: Deliberate movements and signals are an important way to communicate meaning
without words. Common gestures include waving, pointing, and using fingers to indicate
numeric amounts.
Body language and Postures: Posture and movement can also convey a great deal of information.

Disadvantages:
Written communication
Communicating through written words is called written communication. It is a more formal way
of communication and is used for documentation process.
