Philippine Literature reflection
Ang Huling El Bimbo" by Eraserheads is a song
that feels like a journey through time. Its gentle
melody and soothing vocals transport listeners back
to simpler days, evoking memories of carefree
moments and innocent joys. The lyrics tell a story
about friendship, love, and the changes that come
with growing up. The title, "The Last Spinning
Top," adds a touch of nostalgia, making me think
about the fleeting nature of childhood, much like a
spinning top losing its spin. The song becomes a
companion, guiding us through a landscape of

As the music progresses, it becomes more intense,

mirroring the complexities of life's journey. The
lyrics, especially the refrain that says, "You won't
leave me in the kingdom of the night," express a
sense of longing and acceptance of the inevitable
changes that time brings. The recurring motif of
the spinning top serves as a metaphor for the
temporary nature of connections and the reality
that everything has its time. In its simplicity, "Ang
Huling El Bimbo" becomes a reflection on the
beauty of friendship, the inevitability of change,
and the shared human experience that we all
navigate through life's different seasons.

Nick Joaquin, widely recognized as the preeminent
Filipino writer in English, is celebrated for his
versatile and skillful exploration of various aspects
of Filipino life. His mastery of language has led
critics to coin the term "Joaquinesque" to describe
his unique Spanish-flavored English and his
inventive use of the language infused with
Filipinisms. Beyond linguistic contributions,
Bienvenido Lumbera highlights Joaquin's
significance in Philippine literature, particularly in
delving into the country's colonial past under Spain
and examining the psychology of social changes,
especially from the perspective of the youth, as
evident in stories like "Dofia Jeronima," "Candido's
Apocalypse," and "The Order of Melchizedek."
Joaquin's literary repertoire includes plays, novels,
poems, short stories, essays, and journalistic pieces,
showcasing his versatility. Whether adopting the
pen name Quijano de Manila in journalism or
Nick Joaquin, who passed away on
April 29, 2004, left behind a prolific
body of work, including notable
pieces such as "The Woman Who
Had Two Navels," "A Portrait of the
Artist as Filipino," "Manila, My

Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" is a surreal
exploration of the absurdity of human existence. The
