Moot Rules Final
These are the rules for the Intra-College Moot Court Competition 2021. These are subject to
change every year and any excuse for not following the rules by relying upon the previous
year’s rules will be unacceptable.
• “Organizers” means the Society of Mooters, School Of Law, DY Patil Deemed To Be
University
• “Participating Team” means the team which has registered itself for the competition as
per the Rules given below.
• “Participating College/University/Institution” shall be presumed to be the parent
institution of the Participating Team.
• “Participants” means the speakers and the researcher of the Participating Team.
• “Memorial” means the written arguments submitted by each team, submitted according to
these Rules.
• “Speaker” refers to a participant who presents oral arguments in any given round.
• “Advanced Round” means the Final Round, Semi-Final Rounds and Quarter-Final
Rounds of the Competition.
• “Rebuttals” refer to the arguments presented by the Petitioner in response to the
Respondent’s submissions at the end of the main pleadings of all the speakers
• “Surrebuttal” refer to the defence presented by the Respondent to the rebuttals
• “Team Code” refers to the code allocated to a participating institution by the administrator
after completion of the Registration.
• All the rules are only inclusive and not exhaustive for the competition.
• Rules should be strictly adhered to. Any deviation there from would attract disqualification
or other penalties mentioned subsequently.
• All decisions by the Organizers in case of any disputes/ doubts etc. will be final. The
Organizers may make such rules and procedures at any point of time, as they deem fit.
• Imposition of penalties including disqualification rests solely with the Organizers in case
of failure to comply with the rule(s) and deadline(s).

ELIGIBILITY
• All students pursuing law degree from DY Patil Deemed to be University School of Law
are eligible to take part in the competition.
• Each participating team shall have a minimum of two members and maximum of three (3)
members comprising of 2 speakers and 1 researcher.
• No team shall contradict the composition mentioned above.
• A team will be considered eligible to participate only if the registration is completed on or
before 21ST APRIL 2021.
• Any change in team composition will not be entertained after submission of the registration
form unless the Organizing Committee notices an exceptional circumstance.
• Each team once successfully registered will be receiving a confirmation mail regarding the
same, along with a team code given to them by the organizing committee.
MEMORIAL SUBMISSION
• Each participating team in the Competition is required to prepare memorials on behalf of
both Petitioner and Respondent based on the problem released.
• Memorials are to be submitted in .pdf format & Ms Word Format before 23:59 IST,9th
MAY 2021. File name should only mention Team Code with sides. For instance:
DYPSOL-01(P)/ DYPSOL-01(R).
• Memorials are required to be submitted through the submission form as will be provided
by the organising committee. No submissions will be accepted via emails.
• Please note that NO HARD COPIES ARE TO BE SUBMITTED.
• Any Memorial submitted after the deadline will not be accepted. The prescribed page limit
for the memorial is 30 pages.
FORMATTING SPECIFICATIONS
A. Main body: Times New Roman, Font Size 12, 1.2inch margin on each side, Line spacing:
1.5, Body of text: Justified, A4 size paper.
B. Footnotes: All citations are to be made according to the Harvard Bluebook Citation Guide
(19th Edition), Times New Roman, Font Size 10, Single spacing.
C. Team Code: The team code must be ascribed on the right top of the cover of the index.
The memorial shall nowhere mention any particulars of the team, except the Team Code.
There must be no mention of Name, Contact number, Email id etc. at any place. Any
material presented to the Panel should be devoid of any identification marks/seal of the
Team. If any such mark/seal exists, it must be rendered unrecognizable.
COVER PAGE:
a) The Participation code should be in the upper right-hand corner
b) The name of the forum before which the proceedings are being conducted.
c) The name of the competition as header- top centre alignment.

d) The year of the Competition
e) Name of the parties.
f) Respondent- Red & Petitioner- Blue
D. The Statement of Facts must contain a concise statement of the relevant facts of the issue.
As far as may be, the Statement of Facts should be limited to the stipulated facts and
legitimate inferences which can be drawn from those facts and shall not exceed 2 pages,
E. For every hour of delay in the submission from the prescribed time of submission, 5 mark
shall be deducted.
F. Summary of arguments should not exceed more than 2 pages.
G. Any memorial submitted after 9th May 2021 will not be accepted.
Note: The above deduction would apply even if the delay were not of a complete hour. Hence,
for example, a memorial submitted at 00:01 IST on 10th May 2021 would still be subject to a
1-mark deduction.
Not following the instructions regarding given will lead to the following penalties:
a) Use of incorrect font, font size, line spacing, page margins, page size: 3 marks for every
page on which there is a violation
b) Failure to include a specified component in the memorial: 5 marks for every component
c) Length of the Memorial: 3 marks for every page in excess of the prescribed limit
d) Violation of anonymity: Disqualification
Administrators reserve the right to publish, use the memorials submitted for the Competition.
Memorials shall be attributed to DY Patil Deemed to be University School of Law during such
publication and dissemination. The Administrators also reserve the right to use the submissions
for any other purpose they may deem fit while ensuring appropriate attribution.
EVALUATION CRITERIA
The following criteria will be followed for judging the oral rounds:
RESEARCHERS TEST:
• The Researcher’s Test shall take place on 10th MAY 2021 at 2:00pm.
MISCELLANEOUS
• The Teams will be sent the soft copy of their opponent’s pleadings prior to the oral rounds.
• Since the oral hearings will take place through video-conferencing, team which is not
speaking is required to mute their microphones.
• The participating teams shall be responsible for internet connectivity issues at their end.
The O.C. shall not be responsible for poor internet connectivity of the participating teams.
• The O.C. reserves the right to amend, modify, change or repeal any of the competition
rules at any stage. The O.C. shall communicate any changes made in the competition rules
to the Participating Teams.
• If a team believes that violation of the rules of the competition has taken place at any stage
of the competition, the team(s) within half an hour after the completion of the round in
which violation has allegedly occurred should inform the O.C. through email. Team(s)
under no circumstances shall approach the Judges with any complaints.
• Dress Code for the Oral Rounds shall be according to the rules of The Advocates Act,
1961 without band and gown.
• The background of the participating teams should be plain and shall not contain any
symbols or any representations.
• The decision of the Organizing Committee shall be final in all matters concerning the
competition.
LANGUAGE:
The official language of moot court shall be English. Only.
REGISTRATION:
• The Teams must confirm their participation by filling a Google Form for Provisional
Registration last by 21st April 2021.
• After registration the participants shall receive a confirmation mail.
• Participants are expected to register with the Dy Patil mail id ONLY.
LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS:
All abbreviations used in the memorandum must be included in the Table of Abbreviations.
This will include commonly used abbreviations, acronyms and marks such as “%”, “&”, etc.
The List of Abbreviations must be in an alphabetical order.
INDEX OF AUTHORITIES:
The Index of Authorities must list all the authorities cited in the memorandum. The Index must
indicate the page number(s) and/or the paragraph number(s) of the memorandum in which the
authority is cited. The use of “passim” in place of specific page and/or paragraph number(s) is
not sufficient. The Index of Authorities must be in an alphabetical order.
STATEMENT OF FACTS:
The Statement of Facts must contain a concise statement of the relevant facts of the dispute.
As far as may be, the Statement of Facts should be limited to the stipulated facts and legitimate
inferences which can be drawn from those facts.
ARGUMENTS ADVANCED:
The Arguments Advanced and Prayer shall not exceed 25 pages. Any form of legal argument
or legal interpretation of the facts of the Proposition must be confined to the “Arguments
Advanced” section of the Memorial. The exceptions are:
➢ to the extent that the Prayer for Relief sets out the relief;
➢ in so far as such argument may be summarized in the “Summary of Arguments”; and
