Skipper Expo Towed Away

The Irish Skipper Expo in Galway was another outstanding success at a time A poor year for crab pot fishermen got a whole lot worse for one fisherman,
when the Irish economy was in the depths of a recession. This year’s Expo Shane Mc Intyre, owner and skipper of the ‘Jueast’ when a large portion of

managing through different conservation methods are being decimated by for-

Through the roof

Summer 09 brought with it soaring fuel prices and the value of Irish fish
and shellfish catches continuing to plummet right across the board which left
fishermen facing an ever-increasing battle to stay afloat in what is considered
one of the worst year’s in living memory. The volume of inferior imports from
outside the EU entering the marketplace was colossal and a cause for great
concern as they replaced many of the top class Irish and European products in
many of the markets throughout Spain and France.

Quota cuts
CFP failure
2009 was another year of uncertainty within the Irish fishing sector, in Janu-

Mackerel sharing
Minister of State Tony Killeen TD finally made a decision over the sharing
of allocation arrangements of the 33% increase in mackerel quota to the Irish
fleet which was announced late last December as part of the EU Fisheries’
Council package on quotas. The Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation and the CFP review consultation
