Detailed Lesson Plan

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate understanding of the relation of geographical location
of the Philippines to its environment.
B. Performance Standards The learners should be able to analyze the advantage of the Philippines in
relation to the climate, weather, and seasons.
C. Learning Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located using a coordinate system.
Competencies/Objectives - Locate places using latitude and longitude;
-Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located.

II. SUBJECT MATTER/CONTENT

A. Topic Locating places using coordinates
B. Learning Resources Self-Learning Module
C. Reference Science 7: Module 3
D. Teaching Aid Laptop, visual-aid
E. Other Instructional material World Map
III. PROCEDURES
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
A. Routinely activities Good morning everyone! Good morning Sir!

Please stand up and let us pray. Students pray

Please be seated. I’ll check your attendance, say

present if your name is called. (The teacher will Students will say
check the attendance) present when their name
is called
Okay class, I want you to listen carefully to our
discussion. Lend me your ears and attention. Avoid
making unnecessary noises. Just raise your hand if
you have a question or when you want to answer a
question that I’ll be giving later during our lesson.
And do not take off your masks during our
discussion. Because that’s one of the things we need
to observe in order for us to avoid being infected by
COVID-19.
Nakuha? Yes Sir!
B. Review Before we proceed for today’s discussion, let us
have a short review first from your previous lesson. Latitude and Longitude
What was our last lesson all about?

Very good. Now, I want you to identify if the

following picture shows lines of LATITUDE,
EQUATOR, PRIME MERIDIAN or LONGITUDE.

1.

Latitude

2.
Longitude

3.

Equator
4.

Prime meridian
5.

Latitude
C. Motivation Now class, I have prepared a game for you to play. I
have here different doors, I want you to pick one
door to open. Inside the door is a landmark of a
certain city/country. I also prepared the names of the
city/country for you to choose from. Paste it on the
board as well as the name of the country it is
located.
Singapore

Egypt

New York City

Japan

Philippines

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
-Locate places using latitude and longitude;
-Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located.
D. Lesson proper 1. Activity

Now, I will group you into three. Each group must

form a circle. I want each group to observe this
illustration. After studying the illustration, answer
the following questions. You have 5 minutes to
discuss with your group, make sure that all of you
participate and cooperate in the activity.
Guide Questions:
1. What letter is located at 60⁰N, 120W⁰?
2. What letter is located at 60⁰N, 30⁰E? Letter A
3. How about at 60⁰S, 60⁰W? Letter D
4. What letter is located at 30⁰S, 0⁰? Letter E
5. How about at 13⁰N, 122⁰E Letter B
Letter C
After you are done answering, each group needs to
choose one representative to present their answers to
the class.

Very good everyone! Please give yourselves a round

of applause.

2. Analysis
Guide Questions:
1. What letter is located at 60⁰N, 120W⁰?
2. What letter is located at 60⁰N, 30⁰E?
3. How about at 60⁰S, 60⁰W?
4. What letter is located at 30⁰S, 0⁰?
5. How about at 13⁰N, 122⁰E?

What do you think is the first thing that you need to

do to locate a place using coordinates?
Know the
For letter A, the coordinates are 60⁰N,120⁰W Coordinates
Always remember that in every coordinates, latitude
is given first.

So since latitude is given first, what do you think is

the first thing that you need to locate?

Very good! The latitude which is 60⁰.

the latitude
Next step is you need to look for the equator at 0⁰,
as the reference point for latitude.
Then see if the direction is North or South.
What is the given direction of the latitude of letter
A?
Since the direction is north therefore look only for
the lines of latitude in Northern hemisphere. Same
thing goes if the direction given is south. North

For locating longitude, look first for the prime

meridian at 0⁰ as its reference point.
Next is to see if the direction given is West or East.
If the direction given is west therefore look only for
the lines of longitude to the left of prime meridian in
western hemisphere. Same thing goes if the
direction given is east.
Wherever the lines of latitude and longitude
intersect, there you can find the what?

Did you understand the steps on locating places

using coordinates?

Excellent! But what if you are asked to give the

coordinates of a place instead? For example, if I ask
you to give the coordinates of letter F. How will you
the place
write a coordinates of a place?
The first thing you need to do is to identify the
measurement of latitude of the place first. What is Yes sir!
the measurement of the latitude of letter F?

Next is identify the direction, is it located in

Northern Hemisphere or Southern hemisphere?

Correct. So the latitude of letter F will be 60⁰S.

For longitude, identify the measurement of
longitude of the letter F as well as its direction.
What is the measurement and direction of longitude
of letter F?
Very good! That’s correct, since letter F is located
on eastern hemisphere. 60⁰
So you can now give the coordinates of letter F.
Always remember to write the latitude first then
comma and write the longitude. Southern hemisphere

What you have answered here is an example of grid

mapping. Who here knows what grid mapping is?

Very good. This numbers are measurements of

latitude and longitude. This measurements are also
called coordinates.
What are coordinates? 45⁰ East

Very well said!

Again class what is the first step in locating places

using coordinates of latitude and longitude?

After knowing the coordinates, what should we look

for?

Correct.

If the direction is North, you need to look only for

the lines of latitude in what hemisphere?

What if the direction given is South, you need to

look only for the lines of latitude in what
hemisphere?

What is written or given first, latitude or longitude?

What is written or given after the latitude?

Wherever the lines intersect, there you can find the?

Know the coordinates
Okay. Very good.

I want you to locate on your map what country is
located at 13⁰N, 122⁰E?
The Philippines is located near the equator where
places experience extreme weather. The intensity of Northern Hemisphere
these weather that we experience in the Philippines
increases due to climate change. As a citizen of the
Philippines and of the Earth, what will you do to
help fight climate change? Southern Hemisphere
