Story 1

GOLDEN EGGS
Once upon a time there lived a happy family in village. A man and his wife lived happily on a
little farm, tending their flock of geese and selling their eggs at the market. They were not rich, but they
were happy with their life together.
Then one day, a new goose flew in among their flock. The couple
was surprised to find a shiny golden egg in her nest. Each and every day
after that, the goose laid another egg of solid golden!
The couple was soon richer than they had ever dreamed of, but they
were not happy. They grew impatient with only golden egg a day. The
farmer said to his wife, :” Our goose must be full of gold. Why should
we wait to have more eggs? “
“ If we cut the open, “ his wife agreed, “ we can get all the eggs at once. “ So they killed the
goose! They were very surprised to find that it was just like any other geese inside. Even worse there
would never be any more golden eggs!

Story 2
THE GRASHOPER AND THE ANTS
One summer, a grasshopper spent his days merrily singing and dancing. He hopped everywhere,
while ants were busy gathering grains of wheat and corn. He laughed at the ants and said, “ how dull!
Why don’t you sing and dance with me instead of working under the hot sun? “
“We are storing away food for the winter,” they explained, “ you should do the same.”
The grasshopper laughed and replayed, “ Why worry about the winter? I have plenty to eat for
now. “ and he hoped away look for someone to play with
But when the winter came, the grasshopper could find no more food. Shivering, he knocked at
the ant’s door. “ Can you spare me some seeds?” he begged. “ I’m cold and hungry!”
“ We worked hard all summer to store away food “ they answered. “ What were you doing?.
“ I was busy singing and dancing, “ he said.
“ Then sing and dance for us now!” they told him. It’s time you work for you dinner.“

Story 3
THE LION AND THE HERE
Once upon a time, a lion had been hunting for days without catching anything to eat.
“ It looks like I will go hungry again!” he thought. Then he saw a here fast asleep beneath a
shady tree. He moved quietly towards it, thinking, “ At last! Here is a delicious meal sitting and waiting
for me!”
He was about to catch the here when a fine young deer trotted by. The lion thought, “ Now
there is an even better dinner!” He turned and chased the deer. The noise woke the here and he quickly
hopped away.
After a long chase, the lion failed to catch the deer. Tired out he came back looking for the here,
but found that it had run away.
“What a fool I am !” the lion failed to catch the deer. Tired out he came back looking for the

“What a fool I am! “ the lion said as his empty stomach growled.
“It serves me right for losing the food hat was almost mine, just for the chance of getting
more!”
Story 4
THE ANT AND THE DOVE
One hot day, an ant was searching for some water. After walking around for some time, she
came to a spring.
To reach the spring she had to climb up a blade of grass. While making her way up, she slipped
and fell into the water.
She could have drowned if a dove up a nearby tree had not helped her. Seeing that the ant was
in trouble, the dove quickly plucked a leaf and dropped it into the water near the struggling ant. The ant
moved towards the leaf and climbed up three. Soon, it carried her safely to dry ground.
Just as that time, a hunter nearby was throwing out his net towards the dove on the heel. Feeling
the pain, the hunter dropped his net. Quickly, the dove filed away to safety.

Story 5
THE VAIN LITTLE MOUSE

Little Mouse lived in a beautiful little house. One day, when she was sweeping the floor, she
found a coin.

She said, “ with this coin , I’m going to buy a nice red bow for my hair, I’ll look beautiful!”
She was really beautiful with the red bow in her hair. She sat next to the window so that everybody
could see her.

“Little mouse, you do look pretty, “said the donkey. “ will you marry me? “
And she asked, “ what will you do at night? “
“ I will bray like this, “ said the donkey. And he brayed.
“Oh, no, I’ll get frightened, “ said the mouse.
Then the dog asked her, “ Little mouse, you do look beautiful. Why don’t you marry me?”
“What will you do at night? “ asked the mouse.
“ I will bark like this, said the dog. And he barked.
“ Oh, no, I’ll get frightened, “ said the mouse.
Finally, the cat asked her, “ Beautiful little mouse, will you marry me? “
“ and what will you do at night? “ asked the mouse.
“ I’ll sing like this, “ said the cat. and he sang a beautiful song.
“ yes, I will marry you, “ said the mouse.
So they get married, but on their wedding night, guess what! The cat did not sing his beautiful song. He
ate the vain little mouse.
Story 6
MALIN KUNDANG

Long time ago, a woman and her son Makin Kundang lived in a small village near the beach in
West Sumatra. Malin Kundang ‘s father had passed away when he was a baby, and he had to live a
hard life with his mother. Malin Kundang was a healthy, diligent and strong child. He usually went to
sea to catch fish, and brought them to his mother, or sold them in the town.

One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing as usual, he saw a merchant’s ship was being raided
by pirates. With his courage and power, Malin Kundanng defeated the pirates. The merchant was very
happy and asked Malin Kundang to sail with him. Malin Kundang agreed.

Many years later, Malin Kundang became a wealthy merchant, with a huge ship, loads of
trading goods, many ship crews, and a beautiful wife. In his journey, his ship landed on a beach. The
villagers recognized him, and the news ran fast in the town. His mother, in deep sadness after years of
loneliness, ran to the beach to meet her beloved son again.

When the mother came, Malin Kundang, in front of his well-dressed wife, his crew and his own
glory, denied to meet that old poor and dirty woman. Three times she begged Malin Kundang and three
times yelled at him. “ Please remember me, I’m your mother…., Please remember me, I’m
your mother…., Please remember me, I’m your mother….”. “ Malin….Malin…
Malin….. “. At last Malin Kundang said to her, “ Enough, old women! I have never had a mother like
you, a dirty and ugly peasant! “ Then he ordered his crew to set sail. Enraged, Malin Kundang’s mother
cursed him that he would turn into a stone if he didn’t apologize. ” Oh my god! If he is really my son,
curse him into a stone! Malin Kundang just laughed and set sail. “ Haaa….ha….haaaa”.

In the quite sea, suddenly a thunderstorm blew. His huge ship was wracked and it was too late
for Malin Kundang to apologize. He was thrown by the wave out of his ship, fell on a small island, and
suddenly turned into a stone.

Story 7
MOUSE DEER AND CROCODILE

One day, Mouse Deer went down to the river to take a drink. But he knew that the crocodile
might be waiting underwater to eat him, so he said out loud. “ I wonder if the water’s warm. I’ll put in
my leg and find out.” Of course Mouse Deer didn’t put in his leg. He picked up a stick instead and put
one end into the water. Chomp…! Crocodile grabbed the stick and pulled it underwater. Mouse Deer
laughed. “ Ha… ha…ha… Stupid crocodile ! Cant you tell the difference between a stick and a leg? ”
Then Mouse Deer ran off to drink somewhere else.

In the next day, Mouse Deer wanted to cross the river. He wanted to eat the fruits on the other
side of the river. He saw a floating log in the river. He knew that Crocodile looked like a log when he
floated. Mouse Deer didn’t want to be eaten by Crocodile when he crosses the river. He had an idea. He
called out loud, “ Crocodile! ” Crocodile rose from the water, “ Hello, Mouse Deer. Have you come to
be my lunch? ” Mouse Deer smiled. “ Sorry, not today, Crocodile. I have orders from the King. He
wants to invite all the crocodiles in this river to a party. He wants me to count all the crocodiles so he
could prepare enough meal for you. ”

“ Really…? Tell us what to do, ” said Crocodile. “ You must line up from this side of the river to
the other side,” said Mouse Deer. Crocodile then got all his friends and family. They lined up across
the river. Mouse Deer then jumped onto Crocodile’s back. “One,” he counted. He jumped onto the next
crocodile, “Two.” And the next crocodile, “Three.” Mouse Deer kept jumping until he arrived on the
other side of the river. “ How many are there? ” asked Crocodile. “Just enough,” said Mouse Deer. He
laughed as he ran to the forest.
