Worksheet – The Cylinder - Volume and Surface Area

r
(a) Volume of a Cylinder

h
Volume of a cylinder = r2h

(b) Surface area of a Cylinder

h h circles
rectangle

surface area of cylinder = curved area + (top + base)

= (area of rectangle) + (2  area of circle)
= (circumference  h) + (2  r2)

Surface area of a cylinder = 2rh + 2r2

Exercise 1 – Finding the Volume and Surface Area of Cylinder

1. For each of the following cylinders, find;

(i) the volume and
(ii) the total surface area

(a) Cylinder A: Base radius = 2.5 cm, length = 14 cm

(b) Cylinder B: Base radius = 7.4 m, length = 0.8 m
(c) Cylinder C: Base radius = 10.16 cm, length = 12 m

2. A cylinder has a radius of 4 cm and a length of 10 cm.
