Piano Blacks
Birla Carbon offers Raven 5000 Ultra II, Raven® 7000, and Raven® 3500, a complete
range of carbon blacks specifically designed for use in plastics where very high
colour with good blue tone and excellent gloss are desirable. Carbon blacks for
plastics applications that fall under such parameters are known as “Piano Blacks”.
These products provide the colour and surface finish properties required for use
across diverse end-use applications such as electronics, automotive, and appliances.
With their distinctive morphologies and high surface areas, these piano blacks
provide desired properties for very high-end consumer goods.
Performance Properties
Carbon black provides pigmentation (colour and undertone) and UV stability
for piano blacks applications. However, these performance properties are
impacted by carbon black dispersion and masterbatch dilutability, which also
affect the surface finish and impact strength in the end application. Piano
blacks applications require the use of high surface area carbon blacks to

Raven 5000 Ultra II, Raven 7000, and Raven 3500 are
high surface area carbon blacks that increase visible
light absorption resulting in higher jetness. The carefully
engineered morphologies offer a distinct, eye-appealing
blue undertone that delivers a sense of deeper colour.
These products also provide greater UV stability, thus
increasing the life of the finished product.
