conservation of mechanical energy.
Performance Standard : The learners shall be able to: create a device that shows
conservation of mechanical energy.
Objectives : a. Define what is Potential and Kinetic Energy.

III. Procedure
A. Preparatory Activities
1. Prayer
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Recalling of Classroom Rules
4. Motivation
The teacher will present two baskets labelled as “Moved or At Rest.” The
teacher will choose a volunteer student to put the picture that shows either moved
object or object at rest to the basket where it belongs.

The teacher will ask the following questions after the activity.
1. What kind of energy is being used by an object at rest?
Very good! Potential energy. (The teacher will
label the second basket as Potential Energy.
(The teacher will label the first basket as Potential Energy)

2. What energy is being used by moving objects?

(The teacher will label the second basket as Kinetic Energy)

After the students answer the two questions, she will ask them to read the
objective of the lesson.
a. Define what is Potential and Kinetic
Energy;
b. Engage cooperatively in calculations for
potential and kinetic problem solving;
and
c. Value the importance of the existence of
potential and kinetic energy.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Activity
The teacher will group the class into three. Each group will be assigned to
perform different activities.

Group 1 – Calculate the Kinetic Energy of the given problem.

Calculate for the Kinetic Energy of the given
problem.
Problem 1: A car is travelling at a velocity of 10 m/s, and it has a mass of 250 Kg.
Compute its Kinetic energy?

Group 2 – Act and perform at least 5 scenarios that show whether Gravitational or
Elastic Potential energy.

Group 3- Act and perform at least 5 scenarios that show Kinetic Energy.

The rubric will be discussed by the teacher before the students perform their
assigned activities.

2. Analysis
After each group finalize their output, they will report/present their assigned
task in front of the class. After each group has presented, the teacher will ask
the following questions:
Guide questions:
1. What are the energy being calculated based on your report?
2. What do you call with the unit of energy?
3. What are the examples of scenarios in life that we can apply Kinetic
energy? Potential energy? (The teacher presents her further discussions by
PowerPoint presentation.)
3. Abstraction
Introduce topic lesson.
There are two basic forms of mechanical Energy: Potential
energy which is defined as the energy associated with height or
position (PE = mgh) and kinetic energy which is associated with
motion (KE= 1/2mv2). Potential energy is type of energy that is
waiting to be used or considered a stored energy.

There are 3 different types of Potential energy.

a. Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE)
The energy possesses by an object due to its position or
location. Thus, the higher the position of the object, the higher
the GPE.
An object is lifted possess GPE.
b. Elastic Potential Energy (EPE)
Anything that can act like a spring, or a rubber band can have
elastic potential energy.
c. Chemical Potential Energy (CPE)
A chemical bond can be thought of as an attractive force between
atoms.

Mechanical energy conservation applies to GPE and EPE. The

principle of the conservation of mechanical energy states that the total
mechanical energy in a system (i.e., the sum of the potential plus
kinetic energies) remains constant as long as the only forces acting
are conservative forces. This means that potential energy can
become kinetic energy, or vice versa, but energy cannot “disappear”.
It is only converted from one form to another form like potential
energy converted to kinetic or vice versa.

4. Application

A. Identify whether the following has Potential or Kinetic Energy. Write

the number in each corresponding column.
1. A mango fruit high up in a tree 6. A jeepney traveling down the road.
2. A ball rolling down a hill. 7. A paper airplane flying through the air.
3. A large stick of dynamite 8. An asteroid falling towards the earth.
4. A stretched rubber bands. 9. Standing on the stage
5. A set of double “A” batteries in a 10. A book on top of a table
remote control

Potential Energy Kinetic Energy

C. Concluding Activity
Evaluation
Classify whether the description pertains to Potential Energy (PE) or
Kinetic Energy (KE). Write PE or KE in the space provided.
1. Energy possessed by a moving tricycle.
2. An energy of motion, observable as the movement
of an object, particle, or set of particles.
3. Energy due to the position of an object
4. Energy waiting to be used

Agreement
Study the different activities which can be easily performed and
then explain how energy is conserved.

1. Hammering a nail

2. Playing basketball with your friends

3. Biking in a mountain
4. A mother dancing with a baby in
