1 INTRODUCTION
The different lubricants given for the same application do not correspond to each other completely.
Therefore, they are not to be mixed.
When the ambient temperature stays permanently above +50 °C, the suitable oil quality must be
determined by a specialist.
ISO Viscosity grade tells the oil´s thickness. A thin oil has a lower number and flows more easily, while
thick oil has a higher number and is more resistant to flow.
ISO Viscosity grade number corresponds to the mid-point of a viscosity range expressed in centistokes
(cSt) at 40°C. For example, a lubricant with an ISO grade of 46 has a viscosity within the range of 41.4-
50.6, the midpoint of which is 46.
2 ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
Waste oil and material must be taken care of according to the local requirements and KONE
Environment policy.
3 SAFETY
4 WORM GEARS
The gear factory HHG has used synthetic oil in the gears beginning from 1.10.1983. The oil type is
given in the oil label of the gear. A synthetic lubricant contributes to a life time 2...5 times longer
compared to mineral oils.
Synthetic oil must not be applied in gears, the oil label of which gives mineral oil, unless its influence on
seals and on the paint of the gear interior surface has been taken into account. When using oils based
on synthetic hydrocarbons or polyglycol, nitrile rubber seals on the secondary shaft and viton rubber or
fluoro rubber seals on the primary shaft are applicable. When using polyglycol based oil, the gear must
be finished with paint that resists permanent contact with hot synthetic oil.
Oils with a specific gravity more than 1 are polyglycol based. No other oil can be mixed with them.
The following mineral oils include extreme pressure additives. If the additives are sulphur based, they
can cause chemical corrosion of bronze in high operating temperatures. Oils including metallic
additives (lead) and synthetic oils do not cause chemical corrosion.
NOTE! For motor viscosity grade ISO VG150, e.g. Shell Spirax MB90, Teboil Gear Oil or equal.
5 ELEVATOR HYDRAULICS
These greases are suitable for use in anti-friction and sleeve bearings. Because of their wide operating
temperature range and good resistance to water they are applicable as multipurpose greases. So
called graphite grease is not recommended for anti-friction bearings.
Rope lubricants must not contain extreme pressure additives or Molybdenum Disulphide because such
additives can reduce available traction.
NOTE! Rope lubricants must readily penetrate the rope interior and evenly cover the rope exterior yet
also have high film strength, in order to prevent internal fretting corrosion and wear of the outer
wires and sheave grooves. These conflicting requirements are best achieved by using
products which consist of highly viscous base lubricants dissolved in carrier solvent. The
solvent lowers the initial viscosity to ensure good internal penetration and external coverage of
the base lubricant. When the solvent evaporates, the high viscosity of the remaining base
lubricant provides the high film strength needed for protection against internal fretting and
external abrasive wear. The following products are recommended for wire ropes of elevators
by both KONE and the rope manufacturers. Use of other wire rope lubricants is not
recommended because they may result in traction loss, premature rope failure, premature
sheave groove wear or withdrawal of warranty protection by the rope manufacturers. Because
the following products contain solvents which evaporate after an hour or so to leave a thick,
sticky film, they are best applied to the ropes by roller or brush rather than by a reservoir type
lubricator.
NOTE! If traction loss does occur, it means that the elevator has a serious fault condition. Traction loss
must be resolved separately by checking, and where necessary correcting, the system
masses, counterweight balance, rope diameter and groove condition before rope lubrication. In
addition, the use of alternative special silicon based traction fluids is not recommended
because their use will mask the existence of this fault condition.
Guide rails must be lubricated with oils that do not include extreme pressure additives.
NOTE! Primarily recommended to use oils, ISO VG-320 Teboil Larita Oil 320 or ISO VG-100 Mobil
Vacouline 525. Do not mix oils with a different viscosity grade.
