2 How to crochet in the traditional round way

The traditional way of working in the round involves closing each round before starting the next one. When working sc, the round is
closed by a slst made in the first stitch, followed by a ch to bring the work to the level of the next round. But this way will
inevitably leave a line along the closing of the rounds.
To make the gap between one round and the next less visible, you can proceed as described below.

Close the round with a slst made in the back loop of the first Insert the hook in the first full stitch and crochet the first sc of
stitch. the new round.

When working in a spiral, there are no interruptions between

one round and the next, we simply continue to crochet as
described in the pattern.
This is why it’s important to mark the first stitch of each round
with a marker.

While in the traditional 'round way' the beginning and the end of
each round are aligned, in the 'spiral way', they are
characterized by a small step.

stitch where the yarn tail came out (through the last stitch and the loop below). pull the yarn until the new stitch is the same size
as the others and tie the yarn on the back of the work.

9 INVISIBLE START IN A SPIRAL WORK

How to attach a new yarn

to the work by creating
gradual increase compared
to the round below?

pull up the yarn through the

back loop only of the stitch
before the one to be
worked, making the starting
loop on the hook. Work the
first sc as usual in the first
stitch.

When it’s necessary to join

the yarn on the edge of a
hole in your work, it’s better
to insert the hook in the
corner.

10 CHANGE COLOR

To change from one color to

another during the work, make
the last step of the last beige
stitch, for example, with the
yarn of the next color, grey in
this case.

To attach the new color to the

work, use one of the methods
described in tutorial 8.

11 FOUNDATION CHAIN WITH TWO THREADS OF YARN

leave a long tail of yarn at the beginning (about 1/5” or 1.5 PIC 1 PIC 2
cm for each chain you want to make) to crochet the
foundation chain together with the main yarn. insert a stitch
marker on the yarn at the starting point of the foundation chain
(pic 1).
pass the main yarn on the index finger as usual and keep the
tail underneath the finger. Keep both threads under tension (pic
2).

Tighten the marker between your index finger and thumb. The tail yarn goes under the hook, rotate the hook over the index finger,
creating the first loop on the hook (pic 3). The main yarn then goes over (pic 4) and draw the yarn through the loop on the hook (pic
5). This stitch counts as the first of the foundation chain.
Repeat the same steps for the entire length of the foundation chain: tail yarn under (photo 6), main yarn over (pic 7) and draw through
all two loops on the hook (pic 8).

The Linen Stitch is basically a PIC 1 PIC 2 PIC 3

repetition of ch and sc, worked
staggered on each row.

This means that each sc of the

row below corresponds to a
ch, and each ch of the row
below corresponds to a sc (pic
4).
Start a Linen Stitch work with an even number of chains + 2 ch. PIC 4 PIC 5

Each row ends with 2 ch to turn the work. The second chain
counts as the first stitch of the next row.

Crochet the sc of the first row in the loops of the foundation chain
(pic 1). From round 02 onwards, work the sc in the ch-1 spaces of
the previous row.

Ch-1 space: the space under the ch and between the sc of the PIC 6 PIC 7
previous row, not the loops of the actual stitch. The ch-1 spaces
of the first row are well visible in pic 3 thanks to the different
color of the second row.

Ch 1, skip 1 st: ch is worked in correspondence with the sc of the

underlying row, the same sc that has to be skipped, thus creating
the space in which to work the sc of the next row.

Color change in Linen Stitch: change color before the last 2 ch of the row (pic 2).

Linen stitch inc: sc 1 + ch 1 + sc 1 in the same ch-1 space (pics 4-5).

Linen stitch dec: pull up a loop in each of the next two ch-1 spaces, yarn over and draw through all three loops on the hook (pics 6-7).

tips and tricks
TEXTURE AND CONSISTENCY

When you work with sc, depending on how you hook the yarn the first time through the stitch, you get two different textures and
a different consistency of the work.

1. Regular sc: insert the hook

in the stitch, yarn over and
draw a loop through, yarn over
and draw through all two loops
on hook. In this way, each sc
draws a V outside the work.

2. Cross stitch sc: insert the

hook in the stitch, yarn un-
der and draw a loop through,
yarn over and draw through
all two loops on hook. In this
way, each sc draws an X and
the work is firmer.

TIGHT ROUNDS

When making very tight rounds, as in the example in the pictures, you may encounter difficulties in crocheting.
loosening the loop on the hook helps to easily work in the next stitch and pull the yarn through it. Then tighten the yarn on the
hook again and complete the stitch.
