Mathematics
Quarter 1 – Module 7:
Addition and Subtraction
of Decimals
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics 6 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Addition and

Subtraction of Decimals!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by

educators both from public institution to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

ii
For the learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics 6 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Addition and

Subtraction of Decimals!

The hand is one of the most symbolized parts of the human body. It is often
used to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create
and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies
and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Lesson
Addition and Subtraction
1 of Decimals

Decimals can be defined as a whole number; the fractional part is separated by a

decimal point which can be read as “and”. The digits following the decimal point show
a value smaller than one.

Place value is the value where a digit is in a decimal number.

Standard form is the usual way to write a decimal, such as 7.32.

Word form is writing the decimals in words, such as seven and one hundred twenty-
five thousandths.

Let’s study the table.

can be written as 1,246.4726

What’s In

In this lesson we will briefly review decimals and the relationship to place
value. We have just started. We feel how eager you are to learn the content of this
module. We hope that you keep it up for you to accomplish the activities/exercises
of this lesson.

Notes to the Teacher

We are optimistic that you can help the learners achieve the desired
competencies. We encourage you to provide notes, feed backs, and
instructions on how to use this module effectively. In each of the key
elements, the learner will seek your presence but we have to empower them
to assess themselves more effectively and to become self-regulate learners.
Let’s make it happen!

On the Place Value Chart

Before we proceed on addition and subtraction of decimals, it is necessary
that you know how to read and write the standard form of the decimals. And now
let’s try to work on to the next activities.

Activity 1: Battle of Marathon

Read the given figure and write its word name

The marathon is a long-distance race with

an official distance of 42.1950 kilometers, usually
run as a road race. The event was instituted in
commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek
soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle
of Marathon to Athens, who reported the victory.

Activity 2: Write the word name of the following decimal numbers:
1. 6.4531 = ___________________________________________________________
2. 7.96420 = __________________________________________________________
3. 4.78012 = __________________________________________________________
4. 57.8750 = __________________________________________________________
5. 412.5632 =__________________________________________________________

Activity 3: Write the standard form of the given word name

1. Two and twenty-one thousand three hundred sixty-four ten thousandths =
____________________________
2. Eight and four thousand seven hundred ninety-nine ten thousandths =
______________________________
3. Three and eleven thousand five hundred one hundred thousandths =
________________________________
4. One hundred thirty-two and sixty-four ten thousandths =
_____________________________
5. Eighteen and three hundred seventeen ten thousandths =
____________________________

What’s New

Addition and Subtraction of Decimal Numbers

Adding and subtracting decimal numbers is fun and easy to learn. The process
is similar in adding or subtracting a whole number. Now, we want you to try to
perform the activity.

Activity 1: “Merienda Time”

Vince, Kath, and James went to the school canteen to buy snack food. The
three pupils bought different foods from the canteen. Let’s see what food they have
bought and find out how much each spent food for their merienda.

Food Vince Kath James
Kakanin 12.50
Champorado 18.75
Banana Cue 5.00 5.00 5.00
Arrozcaldo 25.45
Total Amount

Answer the following questions. Write your answers on a separate sheet of

paper. Show your solution.

1. How much did each pupil spend for their merienda?

a. Vince = ___________________
b. Kath = ___________________
c. James = ___________________
2. Find the total amount spent by Vince and Kath.
3. Find the difference of the total amount spent between James and Kath.
4. If the total amount spent by Kath is subtracted from James’ total
amount, what have you got?
5. What is the total amount spent by the three pupils?

What is It

There are few things to remember in adding and subtracting decimal numbers.
You can do it by simply following these steps:
➢ Write down the numbers in column and align the decimal points.
➢ If necessary, write zeros in empty decimal place values so that numbers have
the same length or decimal places.
➢ Add or subtract starting from the right, don’t forget to put the decimal point
between the whole number and the decimal parts.

Example 1: Activity 1

11 1 Write down the numbers

12.50 in column and align the
18.75 decimal points.

+ 25.45
Add or subtract starting from the right,
56.70 don’t forget to put the decimal point
between the whole number and the
decimal parts.

For the Activity # 1, Vince, Kath, and James spent Php. 56.70 for Kakanin,
Champorado and Arrozcaldo.

In some cases, we place zeros in the decimal value so that digits are of the
same length. Putting zeros would mean that the decimal place has no value.

write zeros in empty decimal

place values so that numbers
. 4.5100
have the same length or
.+ 1.0325 decimal places.
. 5.5245

These steps may also be applied if the operation requires subtraction.

Checking of answers may also be done by adding the difference to the number
subtracted.

What’s More

After a series of discussion, we want you now to take on the next challenge.
We are pretty sure that you gained a lot on the content of this module. With the
knowledge you gained, try to answer the next activities. We encourage you to solve
manually. You may use extra sheets in solving the activities.

A. Find the sum. Match the addends with the sum. Write the letter of your
answer on the space provided before the number.

Addends Sum

5. 9.2178 – 3.6599 = __________ e. 1.1232

What I Have Learned

Alright! Did you learn something about the lesson? Hoping that you’ve learned
a lot from the start of the module. So, let’s try wrapping up your learning by
completing the sentences.

1. A ____________________ can be defined as a whole number whose fractional

part is separated by a decimal value.
2. __________________________ is the value of where a digit is in a decimal number.
3. The _____________________ following the decimal point show a value smaller
than one.
4. ________________________is the usual way to write a decimal.

5. ________________________is writing the decimals in words, such as four and

two tenths.
6. A decimal point is read as____________________.

7. Write ___________________ in empty decimal place value so that numbers have
the same length or decimal places.
8. Numbers should be written in _____________________________ and align the
decimal points.
