11th grade
Publication
In their 11th grade year, Humanities
Medals students prepare and submit a
substantial body of work for
publication. The nature of the
publication depends on their Medals
specialization.

Language and Literature

Specialization
Students publish a work of literary
analysis, a research study of a linguistic
community, or an original text
otherwise related to language and
literature in a youth journal.

Creative Writing Specialization

Students publish an original short story
or suite of poems in a literary
magazine; or write and produce an
original play before a live audience.

Philosophy and Theory

Specialization
Students publish a philosophy essay in
a youth journal.

Media and Communication

Specialization
Students prepare and deliver a TedX
talk before a live audience or publish a
work of journalistic writing.

*In some cases, Medals students may be allowed to

fulfill this requirement through self-publishing, so
long as they demonstrate an effort to widely
publicize and distribute the self-published work.
12th grade
Project
In their 12th grade year, Humanities
Medals students develop a project
larger in scope than their 11th grade
publication project - intensive work of
research or original creative production
conducted under the guidance of a
teacher over the course of the year.

Language and Literature

Specialization
Students write a literary analysis or
study of a language-related topic
comparable in length to a typical
undergraduate honors thesis (at least
25 pages, depending on the topic).

Creative Writing Specialization

Students write a novella, poetry
collection, play, memoir, or other book-
length creative work.

Philosophy and Theory

Specialization
Students write a philosophical study
comparable in length to a typical
undergraduate honors thesis (at least
25 pages, depending on the topic)

Media and Communication

Specialization
Students prepare and deliver a speech
larger in scope than the 11th grade Tedx
talk or produce a large-scale work of
journalistic writing (at least 25 pages)
Monthly Discussion
Group and Writers
Workshop
During every year of the Medals
program, all Humanities Medals
students - regardless of their
specialization - will gather together
once a month to foster a sense of
community, discuss assigned
humanities texts, and support each
other in their long-term writing projects.

Discussion of Assigned Texts

Under the guidance of a teacher,
students will select humanities texts to
read in advance of the monthly
meetings and will be expected to come
prepared for a rigorous discussion.
Texts may include novels, poetry,
philosophy, literary theory, or other
works that could inform and support
your long-term Medals projects.

Writing Workshop
Some of the monthly meetings will be
devoted to workshopping student
writing. This is a chance for students to
share drafts of their 11th grade
publication projects, 12th grade
research or creative projects, or regular
classroom writing and receive
considered and incisive feedback from
a community of peers and a
moderating teacher.
