The Swineherd

Once there was a poor Prince. He had a kingdom, but only a very small one. Even so, there
were hundreds of Princesses who would have married him. But he was in love with the
Kaiser's daughter, and she was very proud and vain. The Prince decided to send her a
present. He went to his father's grave where a beautiful rose tree grew, which only bloomed
every five years. In the tree there lived a nightingale who sang the most beautiful melodies
you can imagine. He sent these presents to the Princess. When the Princess saw the rose,
she clapped her hands for joy,
But when she touched it she burst out crying. "It's a real rose," she exclaimed. Then she saw
the nightingale, which sang so beautifully that all the ladies-in-waiting called out, "Super be!
Charmant!" (They could all speak French, each one worse than the other.) The Kaiser was
also delighted, but the Princess wanted an artificial bird, and let the bird fly away because it
was real.
When the Prince heard that the Princess had refused his gifts, he didn't let himself get
downhearted. He took a jar of brown paint and coloured his face with it. Then he put on old
clothes and went to the Kaiser's palace. The post of Swineherd had become vacant in the
palace, and so the Prince took on the job. The Prince was given a dirty little cabin down by
the pig stalls. He was never bored. He had brought some tools with him and he set to work
straight away. By evening he had made a little saucepan with bells on. As soon as the
saucepan was boiling, it sang beautifully, and sang the tune, "Oh my darling Clementine!"
That was much better than a rose! The next day he made an instrument with strings that
sounded wonderful. The Prince kept everything in his house and went about his work.
One day the Princess came by with her ladies-in-waiting, just as the Prince was trying out
the new instrument. “l've never heard anything so beautiful. Go and find out how much the
instrument costs!” she said. "He wants ten kisses from the Princess!" said the lady in waiting
when she came back. So the ladies had to stand in front of the Princess so that no one could
see her kissing the Swineherd. When the Princess had her instrument, the whole palace
rang with its beautiful music.
The next day when the Princess was again walking by the pig stall, she heard the tune, “Oh
my darling Clementine! "That was her favourite tune. When she went into the hut and saw
the saucepan of bells, she just had to have it. "What do you want for it?" she asked. "A
hundred kisses from the Princess, “demanded the Swineherd.
The Princess started kissing, and the ladies-in-waiting were too busy counting to notice the
Kaiser coming. When the Kaiser saw his daughter kissing the Swineherd, he was very
angry, and both of them were banished from his, Kingdom.
The Princess cried bitterly. “Oh, woe is me!" she wailed. “If only l'd accepted the handsome
Prince. Now l've got to spend the rest of my life with a Swineherd!" The Swineherd went
behind a tree, wiped the paint from his face, and put on his Prince's garb which he had
hidden there. He said to her: "I've learned to despise you! You didn't want me, but you
kissed a Swineherd for a game! Now you've got what you deserve!" He went back to his
kingdom and closed the gates behind him, and still the Princess stands there and sings, "Oh
my darling Clementine.'"

Once upon a time in a beautiful place, there were lots of animals. In this place, they would
eat grass in the afternoons and drink water in the evenings.

One day, a rabbit went to drink water. There was a big tree near the place to drink water. A
big branch fell down from the big tree, WHOOSH, into the water. When the rabbit heard the
noise, it was scared and ran away.

On the run, it met other animals along the way who were also going to drink water. He told
the animals. Oh you shouldn't go and drink water today, there's a scary creature where the
water is. They asked him, What kind of creature is there? He replied, a really scary creature
that makes a whoosh sound!.

As soon as they heard this, the other animals got scared and ran away. Running, running,
running... after a while they met a lion, the lion asked them, Where are you all going?. The
animals said, There's a really scary creature where the water is. What kind of creature?
Asked the lion. They replied, A really scary creature that makes a whoosh sound! The lion
said, There's no such creature that makes a *whoosh*sound. Let's all gonl there together
and take a look, you don't have to be afraid.

All the animals went there together ,when the lion went near the water, it only saw a branch
that had fallen from the tree but no creature. The lion said, You don't have to be afraid. The
foolish rabbit made you all afraid for no reason. And just like that, the brave lion put all the
animals at ease.
