i. Briefly explain what suffix is.


ii. Differentiate between prefix and suffix.
iii. List at least five suffixes and state their meaning.
iv. Use suffixes to form words and use them in sentences.

Instructional resource: a chart showing affixation and its subdivision into prefix and suffice, and
examples.

LESSON PRESENTATION

Step 1: IDENTIFICATION OF PRIOR IDEAS.

Teacher asks students on what they understand about the day’s lesson topic.

Mode: a couple of persons.

Teacher’s activities: teacher asks students the following questions:

i. What is a suffix?
ii. Differentiate between suffix and prefix.
iii. List two examples of suffix.
iv. How can we use prefixes to extend the meaning of a word?

Students’ activities: students respond to the questions asked based on their knowledge of the
topic.

Step 2: EXPLORATION.

Mode: entire class.

Teacher’s activities: Teachers explains what suffix is, differentiates between prefix and suffice
and states the importance of suffix

From the above examples, we can define a prefix, suffice and root as follows:
● A prefix is a group of letters or word parts that can be added to a root at the beginning
to make a new word with a different meaning.
● A suffice is a group of letters that can be added to the end of a root to form a new word.
● A root word is a word you can change into a new word by adding a prefix (at the
beginning) and /or a suffix (at the end).

Students’ activities: the students listen and repeat after teacher loudly.

Step 3: DISCUSSION.

Mode: entire class.

Teacher’s activities: the teacher guides the students to identify some suffixes, the meanings,
and usage in sentences.

Underline the suffix in the following words and make a sentence with them: (a) inhabitant (b)
remittance (c) laughter (d) fruition (e) sailor (f) purity (g) falsehood (h)touchable (i) active.

Students’ activities: students carry out the class activity in their note books.

Teacher’s activities: the teacher asks students the following questions:

iv. Use a suffix to form a word and use it in a sentence.

Students’ activities: the students respond to the questions asked.

ASSIGNMENT: students are to generate one word each that can be formed from the following
suffixes (a) -fy (b) -ment (c) -dom (d) -less (e) –ness (f) – fic (g) – full (h) – ology (i) –ee (j) – ous.
