Perky Otter
loves to play.
She dips and dives.
She swims all day.

Bert the Beaver
lives next door.
He works all day—
and sometimes more.

They are two very
different neighbors.
One who plays.
And one who labors

Neither
likes the

Perky says,
“That silly beaver
always works!
It’s like a fever!”

Bert remarks,
“That foolish otter
never comes
out of the water.
“Sleeping late!
She’ll never learn.
The early bird
will get the worm!”

At last, these different
neighbors meet.
It happens in the
summer heat.
She runs. She jumps.
The water swirls.
She dips and dives.
She whirls and twirls.

Then she thinks,
“Bert’s on his ladder.

Perky runs a
faster run.
She jumps a higher
jump, for fun.

She hits the water
hard! Ker-SPLASH!
And then she hears
an awful CRASH!
Bert has fallen
off his ladder—
sopping wet, which
makes him madder.

Perky worries
“Are you hurt?
I’m sorry you
in the dirt!”
Bert is fluster
First he sput
Then he mum
and he mutte
“Perky, you are
such a PAIN.
You never, ever
use your BRAIN.
“But what is worse,
I’ve torn my shirt.
I also think
my arm is hurt.”
Perky frets.
She says “Oh dear!

Perky Otter’s
in a hurry.
Worry makes her
really scurry.
“Doctor! Doctor!
Someone’s hurt
Come and help
my neighbor B
The doctor comes
and sets Bert’s arm.
She says, “No work!
That could do harm.”
Perky says,
“I’ll be your nurse.
I’ll make things better
now—not worse!
“I’ll get up early.
You will see!

Every morning
Perky comes
to do Bert’s work.
She sings and hums.
She keeps his house
in perfect order.
Plus, she weeds
his flower border.

After lunch, Bert say
“Please stay.”
So every afternoon
they play.
When Perky goes
back home at night,
she works some more
to put things right.

Soon Bert is better
than before.
He’s learned to play!
And what is more . . .

Activities to Do Together
These activities will support and extend your child’s reading and language skills.
READING, LISTENING, AND RETELLING
• Look at the cover together. Point out the title and the author’s and illustrator’s
names. Ask what the cover illustration says about the story. For example, who
is the story about? What is the character doing?
• Read the story aloud, pausing now and then to comment on the illustrations.
Talk about the setting, characters, and events as they unfold. Discuss how the story
might relate to your child’s own experiences. Then you both might enjoy doing one
of the following activities:
a. Have your child retell the story in his or her own words. Make a recording of
the retelling.
b. You and your child could pretend to be characters in the story. Take turns creating
voices for each character. Then act out the story using the voices you created.
STICK PUPPET SKITS
• Use stick puppets to dramatize the story. You or your child can draw or trace a
picture of each character on construction paper. You can decorate the puppet
with yarn, scraps of material, buttons, or anything else you have handy. Cut
out the puppet and tape or glue it to a solid rod or stick, such as a Popsicle
stick, ruler, pencil, or wooden spoon.
• You may want to perform the story skit using the voices you both created
in the activity above.
