INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND
Shikoswe is one of the areas in Kafue district where there are polluted water drainages,
Shikoswe is divided into three parts namely old Shikoswe, new Shikoswe and green fields,
the population in Shikoswe has been growing in the past few years and so has the number
of improperly disposed wastes.
Wastes are being disposed in water drainages, market places and near settlements because
there are no specific places or means to dispose the wastes, Shikoswe has got land surface
of approximately 15 to 17 km and most of the land is covered by houses, shops, schools
and other buildings.

AIM
The main aim of conducting this research is to identify and know the causes and effect of
improper waste disposal and help sensitize the people of the Shikoswe about the effects of
improper waste disposal
OBJESCTIVE
The following are the objectives of this research:
• To find out the different types of pollution caused by the waste.
• To find out the different types of diseases that are cause by the waste.
• To find out the type of waste that are dumped.
• To find out the reason why wastes are disposed in such a manner and why
people don’t use the trash collector truck.

METHODOLOGY
In this report, two methodologies where used to obtain information this is the primary
methodology and the secondary methodology.

Primary methodology
In this methodology a direct research done and the following methods where use to obtain
information:

Observations
Direct observation of the area was done which includes seeing places were the wastes are
dumped.

Interviews
Questions were asked to the public on their views on why wastes were being dumped in
such ways and the public was asked on the known effects of dumping wastes in water
drainages, this was very effective because several people of different age and status were
asked and information was given accordingly.

Secondary methodology
Under secondary methodology the following methods where used.

The internet
The internet was an excellent source of information especially on the literature review,
websites were quoted were used as reference in this report. Books
Different types of books were used for reference especially research books and text books.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUES
Interviews where done randomly to get a much wider understanding of my research,
targeted ages where people above 19 years old, the people had to have lives in Shikoswe or
Kafue for more than 3 year because most crises happened in 2019 and 2020.

DATA ANALYSIS
Figure 1 shows a picture depicting water pollution during the rainy seasons by the waste
that is dumped on the ground during the dry seasons and is picked up by the rain such
cases are what cause diseases.
The pie chart in the data presentation shows the different types of diseases cause by the
waste that is dumped these are
Malaria: this mostly happens in the rainy seasons because of the dirty stagnant water
that accumulates which provides perfect conditions for mosquitoes to breed and
multiply.
Diarrhea: diarrhea outbreak happen almost every year in Shikoswe and Kafue in general
because of the contaminated water that people take, in 2020 there was a diarrhea
outbreak in Kafue and a lot were affected people where even sacred to take the tap
water and resorted to buying bottled water but not everyone could afford it.
Dysentery: this is also experienced almost every year especially children.
Cholera: it is well known that in 2018 Zambia experienced cholera outbreak schools
where closed, people stopped going to work and a lot of people died in the country,
cholera thrived in unsanitary areas like Shikoswe and this is because of the way wastes
are being disposed.
Figure 1 also shows that the majority of the waste are plastics and paper.
Plastics being a non-biodegradable material means they have a huge negative effect on
the environment because if not properly disposed of through recycling they cause land
pollution this makes the land become less fertile and loses its nutritional value.
The picture in figure on was taken near the market place this is why the majority of the
wastes are plastic bottles, plastic bags and papers.
Marketers, shop keepers and carpenters throw their wastes near the drainages and they
end up in the drainages filled with flowing water.
The bar chart shows a summary of the three major reasons why people dispose waste in
bad ways and why they don’t make use of the trash collection truck, a lot of reasons
where given out but some stood out more than others, the reasons where that.
They could afford to pay for the truck but had no time to take their waste to the truck.
They had no idea about the truck and so they disposed the wastes by burning or
throwing in areas that had already accumulated waste.
Lastly is that they could not afford to pay for the truck every week.
Note: A minimum of k50 is paid per week
As shown on the bar chart a lot of marketers claimed that they never knew about the
truck some said that the truck only passes where houses are and not market places
Some said that they never had time to take the wastes to the truck because they are too
busy in their shops and are caught up with the work.
Daily workers like civil servants factory workers (trade kings, NCZ) and more said they
barely have time to take out the waste because they are mostly at work, some said they
never knew about the truck and so they disposed where a lot of wastes had already
accumulated, and a small number of them said they cannot afford to pay the k50 per
week.
The others category include people like teenagers that were found near the market and
random adults.
LIMITATIONS
The biggest limitation I faced was language barrier, a lot of people needed
required translation and I don’t speak most languages and so it was a
disadvantage.
Some people where not cooperative because they thought the research was a
joke. Another limitation was that some people had totally different opinions on
the subject some took responsibility and some blamed the government.

COUNCLUSION
From the data analysis, the results of the research and with reference to the
literature review it can be concluded that careless waste disposal especially in
water drainages has negatively affected a lot of people in Shikoswe and even
Zambia at large
