Summary:
All matter (solids, liquids and gases) is made up of particles.
Solids, liquids and gases have different arrangements of their particles.
When the arrangement of the particles change, the phase changes.
Activity:
Look at the following drawings which are models of the particles of various
substances in different states and answer the questions that follow.
A B C
D E F
Summary:
When we mix two or more different substances together, we get a
mixture.
We can make mixtures from two solids mixed together, from a solid and
a liquid or from two liquids mixed together.
We can use various methods to separate mixtures into substances that
they are made from.
Methods of separating include hand sorting, settling and decanting,
sieving and filtering.
Look at the following photographs which are mixtures of the two different
substances and answer the questions that follow.
MEMO
1. A and C
2. A and B
3. They are both gases.
4. They are the same substance (different states/phases)

Mixtures & Separating Mixtures
MEMO
A. Hand sorting: I could use my hands to pick out the buttons from the
beads.
B. Filtration: I could filter the mixture of chalk and water. The chalk will get
caught in the filter paper(residue) and the water(filtrate) will pass
through the filter paper into the beaker/conical flask.
C. Hand sorting: I could pick out the peppercorns from the butter or I could
melt the butter and remove the peppercorns with a sieve.
D. Decanting: I could pour off the oil from on top of the water.
